well had smoke coming out of dash for a few sec truck was still running but the amp guage quit working. So tried omitting the guage and still not charging but the alt is putting out 18.43 on the meter any thoughts? not getting to the batt.

The wires that went to the amp gage need to be hooked up.
but first, 18v seems excessive and may be what fried the gage in the first place, it should put out 14v

Oh man you let the magic smoke out. It's never going to work now..... But yeah I think your alt is putting out too much juice like Bob said.
