WOW that does not sound good.
I would jack up the front axle and turn the wheels and see if you can feel anything when turning the wheels by hand.
Try both sides and see if a wheel bearing has gone out. If you do not feel anything with the wheel bearings I would think it
maybe the pumpkin.

When I picked up my M936 and got it home it started making a noise on the right front. Turned out to have water in the bearings and had sat in there a long time and rusted all up and the bearings were about gone.

Are you sure that noise is comming from the front axle, sounds more like a tin vibation or something causing tin or a housing to viberate, I would drop your front drive shaft and see if the noise goes away, look at the u-joints, just does NOT sound like a axle noise, not deep/solid enough, sounds to fast for the axle gearing rotation, sorta sounds like a gear rubbing the side of a housing or mount

I think that I know what it is. It sounded familiar.

My guess is that this is happening due to the LOW/HIGH switch lever for the transfer case being out of position.

I heard exactly the same noise switching from low to high. But as soon as I completed the switch, the noise went away. I did not drive with that noise or anything, but I heard it while changing from low to high.
