Main shaft removal - output bearing

While waiting for my parts (heads magnaflux was good) I'm back on the tranny and the chipped tooth.
Pulled the top and the 1st/rev gear is where that big chip came from. No biggie, will also replace the 2/3 synchro. So pulled jackshaft and seal and am down to pulling that bearing so I can lift the shaft out.
TM says to tap from the front on the shaft but that is with it sitting on a bench.

Edit: Mine is still in the truck.

I used a rubber mallet on the next forward gear to see if it would easily move but nothing. Can't get enough of a swing to put much on it. Probably a good thing.
How is everyone getting the bearing out enough to use a puller?

Can you hang the shaft vertically with the bearing on the bottom? When. Doing bearings I usually cut the cage off so that only the inner race remains on the shaft. Heat rapidly with a torch and the race will fall off.

So how did you get a dowel in this little space?
If you angled it in it must have come out VERY easy. I've got a brass punch I was able to get in at a 45deg between the bearing and gear and then tapped the gear a few times but got no movement. I'm planning on replacing the gear anyway.

It came out this much just giving the housing a few taps with the nut on but this is all was able to get. With a retaining clip on the other end I didn't want to screw anything else up.

I got mine out about that far by using a long bolt and carefully tapping on the outer race, one slow tap at a time, similar to what DaneGer21 did. When the angle got severe enough the bolt would no longer hit on the outer race, I used a large allen wrench and a hammer turned sideways to tap gently on it in the limited space available. But it didn't have to go much further back than what you are at now before I could get my 3 jaw puller to latch onto it.

Mine was pretty loose. When it was that far out I was able to “shake”/pull my main shaft back and it slide the rest of the way out, again it was a loose fit for mine

you can also slide a piece of pipe that is slightly larger than the bearing. the pipe should be long/short enough to just be near the shaft threads so you can put a piece of flat bar across it with a hole in it. screw on the nut and either use washers as make up spacers to pull it off, or a pry bar in between the nut and flatcar/pipe.

Main shaft out. There is an error in the TM on the main shaft parts. It calls a gear the 4th speed but the disassembly calls it the 5th. Don't really care.
4/5 syncro slid right off as described.
After removing the retaining clip and thrust washer the 5th speed gear, as disassembly calls it, along with the sleeve and next gear all slid right off with no pressing. A small pin fell out and I've yet to tell where it goes.

All gears show a little wear but not much. Both syncros look good to me but I don't a good from a bad.

I pulled the main shaft as the 1/5 gear has a chunk out of it and I am replacing it. Unless there is something in the pics I've missed I'm back to looking at the forks to troubleshoot my hard to get 2nd gear. Very tough to it unless I and creeping forward or backwards.

Thanks @gringeltaube.

Went back through maintenance and parts and see no mention of this pin.
While I'm in there I'm replacing the 2/3 synchro. See some wear on the teeth but would rather spend the $100 possibly unnecessary than end up having to do this again.

Do you see anything else needing attention? What about the 2/3 gear clutch? All gears have some wear but no other cracks or chips on the main shaft gears.
