I am seriously considering purchasing this generator. And have a few questions.

1) What do I need to know as far as how is this different that a normal civilian 5kw generator?

2) Are parts still readily available? (Especially filters... Filter cost?

3) What is the modification mentioned at the end of the description?

4) What sort of fuel burn should I expect at 50% load?

5) Asking price is $3200. Does that seem fair/reasonable?

5000 watts @ 120/208 volts 3 phase 60hz

All gauges work as they should
Lister Petter diesel engine
Has the required Mov & fuse modification that protects the generator from shorting itself out when cheaper parts fail

1.) You are the only mechanic... no dealer network to fall back on. Its different in almost every way, past the fact that it produces 5KW. But that's not a bad thing.

2.) Yes. Top of the forum is a 'sticky' thread with off the shelf filter crosses and such. Some parts are easy to find, some are harder... all depends on what you need, when you need it. Many owners stock up on common failure items or preventative failure items so mitigate such concerns.

3.) Its a fuse on the voltage regulator... a needed addition. Be happy its there. A fault was discovered after the product was deployed... this is their fix. Not to worry.

4.) Assume .6GPH at rated load, so probably somewhere in the .45 range?

5.) Its only fair if you think its fair. Seasonal demand, machine condition, how much of a pain in the rear it is to go acquire it... all factors into fairness. Only you can make that call. Considering what a 5KW portable model from Honda costs these days... its underpriced. Compare to Harbor Freight... no, overpriced.

Read up in the forums, tons of info. Good machines if taken care of.

1 no rating games. Civ units are rated by surge watts so a 10k unit is actually good for 8k.

Gasoline sets run at a higher rpm (more fuel burn) and if you are in a natural disaster area (hurricane etc) and resources are limited in recovery, everyone wants gasoline (cars) while diesel is easier to find due to less demand.

2 depends on parts. The consumables are easy, I can't speak for other things as I haven't sourced them

3 in the event of the avr going stupid it can dump more current through the exciter winding than rated. This mod prevents the expensive and hard to access winding from burning up

4 never used one, best estimate is half a gallon per hour, other members with this unit can jump in

5 these have shot up in price, you can get a similarly rated civ unit for about half that cost, again I am sure other members will jump in

Bang for the buck that's a very good price. A few things that I didn't think much about when I got mine was how heavy it was. A 5k little gas genset can be thrown in the front seat. You'll need a small trailer or a forklift to get this out of your truck. I ended up buying a bunch of 2 inch pvc pipe and rolled it on those. It has skids built into the base so it can be dragged in the yard if need be. Where you going to store it. It's made to be kept outside so keeping mice n bees out are an issue. Last was fuel and fuel storage. For me this was easy since I use heating oil at my house for heat. I go through several hundred gallons a year so having 1k gallons at home is easy to keep fresh. Gotta think about if you can get off road diesel and how to store it. It's quiet too...run this and can stand next to it and can have a normal conversation.
