Hey guys.

I'm a machinist with a wood lot and a need for some heavy hauling capabilities. I dreamed of getting a willy's jeep as a kid and now it looks like I'm on the fast track to getting a 5 ton instead. :D

Been lurking around the site for a while and finally broke down and registered so I can ask all kinds of questions you've all heard a million times before. Well, I hope that's not the case anyway.

Hello and Welcome from Utah. I highly suggest hitting the TM section and download and read the -10 operators manual if your interested in getting a M939 series truck

If you only drive it 1000 miles a year?

I know the fuel economy is lacking, but you can buy a lot of diesel for what you save from buying a road truck and prep it to go in the woods.

I would say depends on how far you plan to haul the logs. I only have to haul mine a short distance and can't justify a 900 series and modifications. I use my good old M51a2 running on filtered wmo and load it in the woods with my 8606 forklift. The roads around me a narrow hilly parts of the Ozark Mountains and I happy with the way it performs.

I can build anything needed for converting it. I'm a real machinist, not some button pusher CNC zombie operator. I've also been welding about 15 years (got a late start), and fabricating stuff over 20.

Longest log haul would be Cloquet, and that's 115 miles one way.

I'll be driving it, so I'm not worried about the 55mph top speed. Even considering time lost on the road, it beats the heck out of what log hauler truckers rape you for. For some reason, they feel entitled to a piece of the product they haul for you - above their mileage fees.

Jim,
Welcome from St Paul, MN. I have bought a truck and lots of stuff from Scott (TIE6604). He is a good guy to trust for your first truck and anything else you may need.
I use my truck for personal woods work and hauling stuff. Mixing a little work and play with these big girls is a lot of fun.

Kentucky kicked my ass the last time I spent more than a few hours there! lol

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Also thanks for the good info you've provided me. I'm starting to get a better picture of what the process entails with a recovery.

I was in the last all-male BCT company at Knox. 9 out of 13 cadre were Rangers, as were the CO and XO. We got worked over hard.

Didn't help that it was February when we started the cycle and cold, raining, or both all the time.

Beautiful country down there though. I was just a little too busy to enjoy it then.

It is 2 degrees right now. Kids have missed 18 days of school because of the steep hills and such. Plus, a lot of back roads that never get cleared.
My wife and I went to Mn a couple years ago so she could receive cancer treatment in Rochester, and we both thought it was beautiful there.
But, yes if you don't like the weather here, wait a little bit and it will change!

We've had 40 days below zero this winter, and the average temps should've already gotten back into the 30's on a regular basis - we've had 2 days since November that were that warm.

This is the coldest winter I can remember. Most snow we've had in 15 years.

I'm looking forward to seeing dirt again. I have trees to cut!
