I installed a DYNOMAX 24216 race muffler on my deuce on the advice of our JATONKA and I am extremely pleased with the results. Noise levels are considerably tamed. A deuce will not ever be a "quiet truck" but at least now I can carry on a conversation in the cab at road speed.

One nice aspect of the DYNOMAX is that it slips over the stock Deuce Stack so it does not require any fancy clamps or custom fabrication. I welded up the seam to hold the pieces together but to be honest it was a very tight fit and would most likely not come apart easily. I left the upper stack as it was after cutting it about 7" above the flange. I have a shelter on the back of my deuce and height is not a concern. Besides the farther the outlet is from you, the quieter it is.

I obtained my muffler locally for $51 and used a friends welder to do the work. After a drive to burn off any solvents and finger prints etc. I applied a coat of BBQ black to prevent rust and I will apply additional paint when the weather is a little warmer.

I am planning on picking up an extra Exhaust extension in the event I have my shelter off the truck and want to have a lower profile. It takes just a few minutes to remove and reinstall the stack since I replaced the bolt in the clamp that holds the two together.
Here are some pics and I would rate this project as being really easy. RL

where you can get the muffler

The Dynomax #24216 is available from Summit Racing, and Jegs. I had the price they offer matched by a local autoparts store who ordered the muffler in for me.

The muffler is a heavy gauge solid metal racing type of muffler which is designed to lower the noise by 4 DB. That may not sound like a lot, but every 3 DB is either a doubling or half depending on which way you are going. 4 DB lowered the noise to less than half of the previous exhaust noise level. I have a 150 mile long trip coming up and having taken a 180 mile one way trip before and I just did not want to listen to the noise for 4+ hours again.

If you have not had your stack off, you would not know that the upper pipe is very, very heavy gauge metal. By welding the muffler in low on the extension it is not a factor as far as it's weight and I see the install as being extremely rugged. Of course, there are a million ways to do an install of a muffler on a deuce, and I wanted a muffler that is as ruggedly built as the deuce itself and this muffler, #24216, is up to the task. I would also point out my deuce has the LDS engine with a D turbo, and may have a bit louder bark than an LDT.

When I thought about this project initially, I was concerned about fitting a muffler and JATONKA assured me that the existing pipe would slide neatly into the muffler and John was absolutely right.

Hope this is helpful...

That Blue stack cover is a secret device known only to those who partake of JAVA, a Cup 'o' Joe, or whatever you call it in the morning that starts your day....I hung a weight on it to keep the wind from blowing it off. The truck does anice job of tossing it when it starts.

Anyone ever documented sound levels of the various exhaust/turbo combinations?

I hear everyone talk about how a whistler is a health hazard but I test drove one last week and it didn't seem all that bad.

I like to think my hearing is one of the few things in my equipment shed that still work well and I protect it when I use anything that is initially loud to the point of discomfort but I didn't feel any significant pressure from this whistler deuce.

How about a thread with recordings attached of various trucks from inside the cab at highway speed?

Just a thought.

JATONKA told me he measured a 4 DB difference in his M109 when he installled the same muffler on his deuce. In our conferences, he mentioned that the LDS motor may have a louder exhaust, or at least different in terms of the tone. Even so, I do know that prior to putting the muffler on, it was pretty much impossible to carry on much of a conversation in the cab. Now, it is practical.
The muffler manufacturer states the noise reduction is 4 DB and it would appear that specification would be accurate. I raised my outlet about 14" so that also reduces the noise in proximity to the cab of the truck which will also have a bearing on how loud the stack is.
Prior to installing the muffler I had rotated the stack outlet so it was pointed straight to the side which did lower the noise somewhat, but that change is nothing compared to what the noise level is now.
I have a 150 mile trip coming up in a week and I will let you all know how my hearing is afterwards. I do have full coverage headphones if it is too loud but I do believe it will be much inproved.

A couple of thoughts: If you constrict a diesel too much, the EGT's will get too hot under very hard working conditions like pulling a big load on a trailer up a hill. You need to install a pyrometer in the exhaust manifold if you haul alot. Get it over 1250 degrees and the oil in the turbo from the engine will not keep it lubricated and you cook the turbo. That's why the diesel dudes put huge non-restricted exhaust on their toys. I found while I sandblast for work, That the cheap ear plugs will let me hear people talking even inside my respirator hood while they can't hear anything. I can hear my shop phone ring with earplugs with all equipment running during re-claim. So, simply wearing the cheap foam earplugs will be my fix to the noise problem. If you are worried about your friends, keep extra plugs in the glovebox for them. I'll bet you can even hear your cell ring if not on vibrate. Now------talking to them while running------ah no. Interesting thread to think about though, Thanks! John

I wished I had taken a picture of the interior of the muffler before install. It is straight through with a glasspack in the extended portion to absorb some of the noise without impeding flow. There are no changes of exhaust direction through the muffler and it is the same size inside as the pipe leading into it.

I will let you know how it works out after my trip. I do know JATONKA took his M109 cross the country including over the Rockies and the Cascades twice each when he convoyed accross the country and back two years ago and had no problems.

Oilleaker, on long trips, ear muffs and plugs don't work. Once they are in for a "certain" (different time lengths for everyone) time, they will give you ear aches and head aches. I like this idea of 4db reduction.

The muffler I chose is straight through as well(made specifically for a diesel). I had your worries in mind when I bought it. Ear plugs don't help keep the neighbors happy either, and the last thing I want is negative attention brought to my MV.

Yeah, I picked up an aeroturbine xl muffler, it flows like a straight through but meets DOT sound reduction requirements.
