Muffler

On both generators and welders I've used tractor mufflers with good success. Any tractor supply store should have a good selection of them. They are designed for free standing applications and seem a better choice than an automotive muffler.

A large muffler, especially on a portable unit, would need some careful bracing to prevent damage to the exhaust manifold.

Give some thought to some room for thermal expansion when things heat up. I've used a short piece of flex exhaust pipe as a vibration isolator and expansion joint.

Any pipes would need fairly large radius elbows to reduce back pressure.

For threaded pipes I've used galvanized rigid metallic electrical conduit elbows due to the large, smooth radius of the bend. They are inexpensive and can be found at any electrical supply house and most home centers.

Whatever you choose, consider a flapper to keep the bees and wasps from setting up housekeeping in the muffler and to keep rain out.

Good luck

The dealers should have catalouges whith say according to the engine fit to your Generator the maximum back pressure allowed. Selecting the muffler you should care for this, too. The catalouges usually list recommended mufflers for the engines!

Thats one of my projects for next weekend. Have a 7 KW Briggs 14 hp V twin.

Will weld a stubb tube over the origional muffler outlet and run a flex pipe to a 2 1/4 inch auto muffler. I will post pics of the aftermath.
