Hello,

I joined this forum on behalf of an EMS agency that more recently took ownership of a 2002 Stewart & Stevenson M1083 for high water/blocker duties. The unit is in relatively good shape as it was placed in the GSA excise program from a mid-west guard unit simply because of age. It's last refurb was at Red River with a 2011 CARC date. Our agency was able to take it on at no cost to us short of flying out to Chicago, driving to Lansing, MI and then driving it back. We have noticed some more minor issues that are in need of attention along with regular PM, but we are unable to find anyone in NJ that is willing to work on it except for CAT who has insane pricing. Oddly enough, there is a Stewart & Stevenson service center in town, but they refuse any service beyond engine/transmission service since they no longer hold the production contract.

If anyone can point us in a good direction, we'd greatly appreciate it! If we cannot find a service vendor in the first 18 months of ownership, will not upfit the vehicle and will ultimately end up liquidating it.

Thanks in advance!

I have to start by saying that I am not in New Jersey.

In my opinion, the CAT dealer really isn't going to fix anything except the power plant. That is what they work on mostly so if you need that sort of service they could be a resource. CAT engines should use CAT filters. Yes, you can get something cheaper, but why not get the right stuff?

Other than that, you don't mention what else you might need help with. Maybe post a list of things you need help with?

A lot of the guys on these forums have good contacts who can make suggestions or can help you locate a shop with the skills you need.

What is wrong with it? How many miles are on it? I bought a 1983 M900 series 5 ton truck that sat in a depot for 8 years after being reset at Red River. Put in new batteries and drove 1,000 miles home. Once all the 8 year old fuel was burned, it ran like new. It had 5,000 miles on it. These trucks are usually very reliable. They do require some level of maintenance and care but with the technical manuals and lube order, you should be able to get years of use out of it. I will say they like to be driven from time to time. Just sitting in the sun is hard any vehicle.

It’s small/regular stuff and we just aren’t equipped to do. It ranges from fluid changes to hose changes and possibly disabling CTIS. It’s regular items, nothing wild.

I finally found a local truck shop willing to work on this unit that isn't a major overpriced corporation. Wish us luck!

On a side note, if everything works out, does anyone know where we can purchase bows, canvas and bench seating?

I have both tan and camo. Bows are expensive to ship but I have them in NC
