Pennsylvania M35A2 owners.....A couple questions for you.

I'm new to the site, so please pardon me if I've posted this question in the wrong section.

I'm getting very close to purchasing my first M35A2 and I have a couple of questions for those who have trucks registered in Pennsylvania. First, how have you registered your truck? I know some have used the PA Antique/Historical registrations, but I am concerned with any restrictions of use that the Antique plates may bring. Second, for those with either historical or standard registrations, what/who are you using for insurance? I haven't checked with my current insurance providers yet, but would like to have a general Idea of what I am looking for before I continue with my purchase.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Pennsylvania M35A2 owners.... A couple questions ror you.

Justin, welcome aboard I'll try to help you out by telling you what I have gone through,
I got my duece last year from a GL sale when no SF97's were being issued, tried to title with just a bill of sale, no go them GL started issuing the SF97 got Pa. title no problem.
Then tried to reg. as antique have to have pic. someone at Harrisburg said it was rusted and not restored so the appl. was rejected. (I thought it only had to be origanal not restored) didn't fight them I endded up putting on a weight class 6 reg. on I think that is 17,000 lb. GVW cost $240 I think.
I have my insurance with State Farm as a pleasure vehicle 30 miles weekly to and from work driven 7500 miles or less annually cost $162 semi annually.
When the truck tag expires next year will be done with paint and other things, then will get $75.00 perment antique reg. and state farm has antique insurance for $75 a year.

My deuce was an ebay purchase from a guy in New Hampshire. He had a NH title, which I used to get a PA title.

I use it to haul logs and boards, and am writing it off as a business expense. It is titled for 23,000 lb, for $405 annually. I'd like to have gone 26,000, but the titling and insurance agency told me it would be a lot of hassle and higher premiums because the dash plate says 23,000.

I have commercial insurance from National Indemnity Company through an independent agent. The annual premium is $850.

It has to be inspected twice a year.

I find that the historic tag works for me never been stopped or ticketed really ecconomical and since I only use if for fun and not too often at that having it historic works fine. I have even used the M969 to haul huge logs out of the woods to the sawyer with the duece and never had an issue.

All of these trucks are over 25 years old so it should not be a problem it sounds rather odd that they asked for a photo with an old vehicle title in hand. I have both my M35 and my M52 registered that way and intend to keep them that way even if I start using them more when I retire.

I just finished registering mine in NJ. finnally got rid of the dealer plate LOL. I registerd it historic plates, and needed two photos of the truck to do that, the registration was $44.00 bucks and the classic car insurance cost $104.00 a year,
I do have a quick question also! GL sent me a florida title for my duece, I thought the sf-97 was something other than an actual title? The name on the title was GL at elgin AFB, Just seemed kind of odd, but made it very easy to transfer the title and register.

I've had a M35A2 registered in PA since 1999. I've had two different ones both registered antique/historical. 1st was a cargo bought direct from DRMO before GL days and 2nd bought private. No problems titleing; I had a SF97 both times. 1st was a cargo; 2nd is a cargo truck now with a civvy dump. I insure mine with Progressive; not the cheapest but good insurance coverage. I use the dump alot on the highway with the antique tags to haul; not legal but most PSP troopers wave at me when I drive by. Most of the troopers are local and don't seem to care/know that I have antique tags. I've talked to some local PD officers where I work (I'm a paramedic and work side by side with them) and most/all don't know that it's illegal to haul with an antique plate. Keep the truck in good mechanical and cosmetic shape; drive sensebly and you won't have a problem. Rick

I registered my M35 about 8 years ago and recieved an antique plate for about $75 and the registration was around $50. The plates and registration are paid only once. The plate is a lifetime plate and can be moved to new antique vehicles. No problem with use either as I drove my truck to work about once a week. Plus sold and hauled 10 to 12 cords of firewood each fall. Never stopped once in 8 years. No inspections required either. Drive normal and be cautious and you will be fine.

I use Erie and pay about $350 per year.

But, I moved to TN this summer...

This is who I use for insuring my M35A2. They insure military surplus vehicles, classics, etc. When you call, you will talk to a human. They are great! My rates with them on two vehicles is incredible. I am very happy with them and the service I have received. [thumbzup]

Thanks guys for all the input. Yea when I get one ill prob just do the same and hope i don't get pulled over. Cause I don't plan on driving it all the time but when I do plain on drive it 90% of the time it will be towing or haveing stuff in the bed. How about inspection in pa with the registration, do you need it? if so how many times a year, twice? also what about difference driver licenses? Cause class C licenses is good up to 26,001 you can get a class B or A "NON COMMERCIAL" license buy taking a written test also with a drive test. Just wounding if anyone has done it? i called DOT and talked to a woman about it and it's really for people with motor homes. thanks kyle

I checked with them this afternoon and they were not able to quote for my area of PA. I'm going to check with my agent tomorrow. My daily drivers are with Erie and my others with American Collectors through him. Hopefully, he will be able to come up with something for me.

No CDL required as the weight is below the cut off. When you register it you will need one photograph of each of the four sides to go with the application. Also, there was a BS license plate/brake light issue that was settled and as long as it is original you are ok. Driving at night is harder as the trucks don't have many lights. I added two runing lights near my turnsignals as well as soem high visability tape on my bumper and tail gate. Supposedly the antique plate woudl not work for your daily driver so don't drive it everyday.

You can see the lights on the fenders

PA inspection is yearly not twice a year like it used to be...it's still a racket though-
Is that dependent on weight class, or is it yearly for anything under 26000GVW?

No inspections needed for antique plates.

Have you ever had any issues using your truck with the Antique Plates? You said in a previous post that you do haul at times with yours....correct?

I have Antique/Historical plates on an old Chevy truck, but it sees very little use.
