I am planning on repainting my m1008 later this summer using Rapco paint, I am wanting to go 3 color camo. Do I need to prime the truck before I use this? The truck is currently red and black, I am wondering if the black it gona show through or require more coats? This is gona be my first try at vehicle painting so I am in a whole new area here for me. Also, I cant find xylene locally so will laqure thinner work in the mix or do I need to work harder at finding the xylene?

It can be sprayed over existing oil based enamels but you'll want to scuff/lightly sand the existing coat and make sure its clean and degreased. I wipe down all surfaces I'm going to paint with denatured alcohol.

I haven't had any see-through issues on different colors of Carc, but I do go over it with a couple coats.

Both the DA and Xylene should be available at Lowes and Home Depot. I haven't thinned it with anything but xylene but I recall others have used regular paint thinner. I think you'll also want to mix in a paint hardener. I use the Valspar tractor restoration hardener stuff from Tractor Supply, it dries quickly for light handling and seems pretty tough after it fully cures. If you mix in the hardener make sure you wait 30 minutes or so for it to activate before using the paint.

Got some leftover paint mixed up? Here's a tip, put it in a jar and stick it in your freezer. It'll stay good for several weeks.

xylene is not avalable at lowes here, what is DA? We dont have a tractor supply here either so I am unsure about the hardner, is there another product I can look for or do I just need a paint hardner? I had not herd of that being needed with the Rapco paints.

I used Rustoleum rusty metal primer over a mostly sandblasted body. I used Xylox as a thiner. Paint was Rapco 383 green and brown and Rustoleum flat black. All sprayed through a Harbor Freight gun.

Rustoleum rusty metal primer here. But I paint with a combination of rattle cans and house paint.

Black won't show through, red is worse for that. You should be able to just scuff it up with a scotchbrite pad or some 80 grit, and blast over it with the rapco.

Xylene is a pretty common paint thinner or reducer. Try a Sherwin Williams industrial paint store, you know, the ones that supply the auto body painters.

I haven't sprayed Rapco paint before but if it is an enamel then just about any enamel thinner will do. Xylene is a pretty basic paint thinner. There are many other reducers that will work as well.

DA: Denatured Alcohol. You can also wipe down with acetone/mineral spirits but it doesn't evaporate as quickly, the problem being if the cleaner/degreaser hasn't fully evaporated before top coating the paint job could fail.

Yes, mix in an enamel hardener with the paint and thinner if you want to speed up dry time and enhance the hardness of the paint. Any enamel hardener from a paint shop, Napa, amazon.com etc should work.
