recovering m871 with m818?

so i now have a m871 to go pickup. i have a m818 with 53" tires on it. any one know of any other unforseen problem with this? other than it having a hard time pulling with the 53s on it. lol

FYI - it is a m872a1. It was a typo that government liquidation put on the auction. The typo said m87a1. So it got me all ass backwards. Anyway it turned out to be the right trailer I'm on it at a great price and everything works on it. I think it is a 2005 model.

Does the 871 have air brake chambers that might need to be caged. One cage bolt for every air chamber if they are not working. You will also need tools a 9/16 wrench or sockett set will fit the slack adjuster bolt and you might need to loosen or tighten them. Also a BFH if the brake shoes will not release. Beat the drum till they are free. Cetain boost for the fuel. LOL

The TM for the 871 specifies;

When towing the semitrailer with the M818, the fifth
wheel wedges on the M818 are to be in the locked-in
(pushed in) mode for highway and secondary road use,
and in the locked-out (pulled out) mode for cross
country operation.

What's a TM. lol One would think that locked wedges would only effect you when you crosscountry. Locked or unlocked one would think on the hard road no problem. You might want to grease the 5th wheel if you have not done it to your truck.

what about the trl clearing the tires? or jacking the trl so the truck can get under it?(how high dose the trl jack up?)

the locked wedges i would thank they are there so when you go around a corner it will help keep the trl from tipping over when you got a load.

I have to respectfully disagree with this Floridianson, based on experience. I hauled an M114 APC on flatbed semi trailer behind an M818 once. We spent some time on dirt roads and took out the wedges. When we got back to the highway, we neglected to re-install the wedges. A few minutes of highway travel was enough to convice me to replace the wedges. There was a lot of side to side rocking of the trailer that was a little scary, maybe because our load was a little top heavy.

They go down pretty far and you can always cheat with stacked wood. The jacks travel at least 12" to get to the ground. You take that space up with wood flats and easily gain additional height.

Be sure to take pictures I've never seen an M871 on a M818 with 53's...LOL

I'd offer to jack mine up and measure, Unfortunately It's against the wall, and just getting it off the truck was a few minutes. Not something I'm willing to do right now, packing for my trip and it's raining.

King-pin is 46" off the ground, TM lists the landing gear extension at 14" max. With blocking and the ramps you should be fine.

I would take enough large wooden blocks and a 5 ton jack to pick up the trailer so you could get under it . maybe you could put your old tires and wheels back on just for this recovery ? check your spare tire .

I need to know the measurement from the deck plate to the ground with the trailer jack all the way up. I am getting the trailer from GL And they are telling me they will not assist me with hook up.

I think the 871 has about 100" from kingpin to landing gear - Much more than the 818 needs in a stock configuration. I seem to recall seeing a photo of an 818 with 1600R20 tires pulling a M127 trailer. If it can do that, I would imagine that it can pull a 871, which has considerably more kingpin to landing gear clearance.

If you can get to the lower edge of the ramps, HOOK up your air lines to the trailer, set your trailer brakes, then back up, sliding up the ramps till the 5th wheel, then to the OPEN latch, a slight pull forward to check the latch lock, your done
