Recovery? Lost...... or Stolen from Ft. Indiantown Gap PA.

OK........... So I just got back in the door from the excruciating trip we took to PA to get an M818 tractor. More details on that recovery when I have the pictures downloaded.

Keep in mind I, my Dad and my lady have been awake for 31+ hours straight now.

The topic I am bringing up here is the stuff that gets stolen off of your awarded lots before you can recover them. This is a dispicable practice and it should be dealt with. There needs to be a hall monitor or a volunteer, some GL staff or an ADULT that makes sure someone does not come to recover their vehicle and makes it brand new with stuff off of the other awarded lots still in the yard. This has happened to me twice now at two different yards in two different parts of the country.

When I saw what was missing I went back through the pictures from the sale to make sure it was there before the sale. Sure enough it was. Also I know the tow company that recovered and stored my truck did not take it because I have proof of that.

The money it will cost me to replace it makes me angry. I tried to buy one to replace it every time I stopped someplace big enough that they might have one. My lady spent countless hours on the phone trying to call ahead to places in advance of when we would be there. The thing that makes me madder than a mountain lion is that I ended up needing it at 2 am when I had a double blowout on the trailer in the middle of Kansas.

And guess what! When I needed it it was not there because someone did not have enough truth or honor in their heart to leave my stuff alone.

My truck was at Ft. Idiantown Gap PA. and was part of sale # 5039 back in early February of this year.

Whoever took it you know who you are and I hope this favor gets paid back to you in spades!!!!!

Also whomever took my stuff and wants to be man enough to admit it post up or PM me and I will drop the whole issue. If nobody wants to fess up I'm gonna have a conversation with GL about it on Monday. You have today and tomorrow. Search your soul, if you have one, and do the right thing.

I doubt the person that stole your stuff is a SS member. I agree more needs to be done about protecting merchandise after it has been auctioned.

I liken it to going to the grocery store and people going through my bags at the check out isle after ive already paid and helping themselves to my food. What these people are doing is a CRIME and GL should be sued for neglect and not doing there due diligence to stop theft.

And the military bases that GL lots are on, the base commander should be brought into the loop as to the amount of theft that is being allowed to happen under his command.

I agree it is not likely that this person is a SS member and I will likely not reach the culprit from this post......But you never know.

Maybe they needed this piece more than I did at the time and forgot to leave a note with their info and how we could settle up. Yeah! Right!

What I am getting at with this post is we the GP that buys from GL have to be careful and we as SS members need to band together on this kind of a thing. If you are at a yard and you see someone taking stuff off of a truck and putting it back on another truck. Or they pocket the items. Or they are rummaging through lots other than their own.....Say something to somebody about it. Weather it's to that person directly or yard or post personelle. A dialogue about the issue can clear up 99% of suspicious things.

I have a truck to pick up from that sale. I am still waiting on the EUC. I hope I still have something to pickup when I finally get my euc.
Me too brother. Good luck! I had H&S Towing get my truck out of there and to their storage yard as soon as I could arrange it because I have fallen victim to this kind of thing before. I can make the tow company somewhat liable but I am still unsure how that works from a GL/Army depot.

John, Sorry to hear of your misfortune. In my opinion, the Government has made GL is responsible for this property until you sign for it. If GL blows you off, I think a call or letter with photos attached, is warranted to the CG of the Post, with copies to the Post Provost Marshall. This crap has been going on for some time now, and has to stop. It's always the same few GL locations too.

I think once the truck is posted for auction is should be off limits for removing anything. Sometimes it's soldiers getting parts, sometimes it's GL customers. Once the truck has a high bidder, it should be concidered the property of the high bidder conditional on EUC approval. Soldeirs who take parts/tools after that should be be demoted/punished for theft. GL customers should be banned from that base permanently for theft. There's no excuse for taking anything off a truck a person has already paid for. AS-IS means in the condition when it is auctioned and paid for. Not whatever is left when you pick it up.:soapbox: :deadhorse:

its supposed to be. thats why the property GL is selling has the NO SCREENING decal on them. this is supposed to stop post personel from taking what they need. Does it? most times not. but in the end GL should make it right. they sold you a truck with X equipment on it and thats the way it should be.

Imagine you buy a new car and when you get there the radio is missing and someone has taken the mirrors? do you think you'd drive it off? heck no. until we stop taking the bad property off their lots and demanding it be made right they won't do a dang thing about it.

Unfortunately all GL will do is give you the option for a refund of your sale. Of course that means returning the truck which is not feasible now.

Yea, they suck, we all know it and it does not look like they are gonna change their policy.

I made a laminated sign and put it on the inside of the windshield of my deuce that says "SOLD-Do not tamper." The GL guys also let me wrap a chain around the cab. I've heard Ft. Riley is not so bad for theft. I hope so.

So we stop taking the damaged goods off the lot - then what? We get a refund and it goes back on sale. Even if EVERY collector got together and decided they weren't gonna take it, the only thing that's gonna happen is the price will be cheaper for the big dealers. The big guys aren't going to care if a few things get robbed since the prices will fall and soon they will be the only game in town.

My chocks got stolen, my locks got cut, my tow ring was stolen. I still got a great truck for under 1500 and someone, somewhere will hopefully die early from bad karma.

You are correct, however it's just a matter of time before someone ends up suing GL for a pattern of items being removed from the vehicles, and GL's responce of here's your money back won't fly. Class action suit comes to mind.

Given the cost of a recovery, GL should be held responsible for costs associated with a declining the vehicle due to the item no longer being what was advertised/purchased.

I still think your best bet John, is to inform the Military.
I think a little discussion with the base commander might get some action...especially if you mention to him that the Cable NEWS people might be interested in how lax security is on the base and maybe next time some weapons might get stolen instead of parts off decommissioned vehicles.

I had the front windshields and headlights stolen off my Deuce at Camp Beauregard, LA. a few years back. They have lousy security at the GL location in the post. We were allowed to roam around for hours without any escort.

I want you guys to do a Google search for the word BAILMENT. It will answer your legal questions.

BAILMENT
A legal relationship created when a person gives property to someone else for safekeeping. To create a bailment the other party must knowingly have exclusive control over the property. The receiver must use reasonable care to protect the property.

A bailment is the act of placing property in the custody and control of another, usually by agreement in which the holder (bailee) is responsible for the safekeeping and return of the property. Examples include securities left with the bank, autos parked in a garage, animals lodged with a kennel, or a storage facility (as long as the goods can be moved and are under the control of the custodian). There are different types of bailments- "bailments for hire" in which the custodian (bailee) is paid, "constructive bailment" when the circumstances create an obligation upon the custodian to protect the goods, and "gratuitous bailment" in which there is no payment, but the bailee is still responsible.

unfortunately your options are limited. GL doesn't care and won't refund you the $ to replace your lost items,

So either ask for a refund on the deal or suck it up and replace the items yourself.

you could always buy privately and avoid them altogether.
