Registration to drive off base?

Quick question about a getting a vehicle off the GL lot.

Not sure if I read this right, but the GL Lot info in MI says that I need license, insurance and registration to take a vehicle off base.... thats cool.

How to I insure/register a vehicle I don't own?

Are there some keywords I need to say when on the phone with the insurance co/notary/DMV?

Also, PA says I'm good with a Class A. Anyone ever get checked for this at the gate?

Getting on base and driving on base is where you need registration and proof of insurance. However, driving out the gate doesn't require anything except just driving out. Really no big deal. Don't get any ideas of doing a joyride around base. Just get your truck and drive safely to the nearest exit.

Insurance / Reg.

The tag and insurance requirement is on the vehicle you are driving into the base with. Not the vehicle you are picking up. Also it depends on the base as to how strict they are. I was recently at Warner Robins and was prepared with everything but they did not ask to see it. We got the vehicle we picked up and drove it out. However, at Ft. Jackson - SC you have to tow out the vehicle. I would call the location first to verify if you can drive it out. As to the other stuff you should have a tag on your vehicle and have a insurance card anyway so its no big deal.

You can still get insurance for the vehicle by just giving the VIN number to your agent and adding it to your policy (you can do that on your neighbor's car if you want to and have the VIN - no ownership requirement). Don't plan on driving a 13k pound, 30+ year old vehicle without insurance. The odds of something going seriously wrong (brakes for example) are infinitly higher than driving a used car off the lot.

There are a TON of threads about deuce insurance. Make sure your agent knows what you're getting insurance for and tells you point blank that there are NO exclusions for vehicles over 10k lbs. If you simply add it to your auto insurance you likely won't have coverage in the event of an accident.

Personally, I would not drive a deuce unregistered and uninsured on any roadway where all
other vehicles are required to be registered and insured, even on a base. One serious incident
could cost you many years of your income
Just my 2 cents.

at selfrige its no problem driving off base get insurrance ,in michigan you have 48 hrs after purchess to drive the
directest route home .

In SC, you must have insurance to drive on a public street. You can also drive for 10 days on a bill of sale(paid invoice). After that, you need a 45 day temporary tag.

I just talked to my agent about this . I have a M35A3 to pick up , and drive home . My agent says anything I purchase I am insured on the way home by my existing policy . I carry proof of this , every where I go its the law .

Better have good proof of that, just in case you get pulled over on base. If your lucky(in that situation), you will only get a fine and tow bill, off the base.

That's true for a car or light truck but usually not for something the size of a deuce.

Call your agent back and ask if there are any exclusions regarding size (or look at a copy of your policy). Most auto policies exclude vehicles over 10k lbs. That include large Uhaul or Ryder trucks.

Here's what my policy reads under the definition of "Your Covered Auto:"

"a pickup or van with a GVW of 10,000lbs or less"

That means that my Auto Policy would not cover me in this situation. If it were a CUCV then I'd be covered.

If your agent can't tell you then call your ins company's claims dept and ask someone there. And ask them specifically to read you the section of the policy that says you'd be covered in a truck that large.

There's also the issue of when you purchased the vehicle. Most policies allow a 30 day grace period from the PURCHASE DATE (not pick up date) but after that they require you to either add or exclude the vehicle from your policy. If your Paid In Full invoice has a date more than 30 days prior to your pick up of the vehicle then you likely wouldn't be covered then either.

I regularly drive and tow vehicles off Redstone.

I always have a valid tag and proof of insurance for my prime mover.

GL has never asked for proof but if Murphy gets ahold of you and you need to produce proof of insurance to the MP's (for whatever reason) you might be screwed.

Any driving infraction on a military base has to go to a Federal Magistrate.....including speeding tickets or other citations.

Best advice is Cover Your Azz.

I made sure he knew exactly what I was talking about , he insures my M35A2's The paid in full invoice will be dated AFTER the EUC clears , not the date the auction was won . The bill of sale that comes with the title will have the date the titles were processed at GL . then truck will be picked up in less then the 10 days required . I also believe it would be hard to get a policy written up on a vehicle that I have no tittle to , which will take up to 30 days after the truck is already home . I am a new guy I can not believe some of you old timers do not know this . If I go purchase and drive a new car off the lot tomarrow thier is no way in **** I can get a policy before I leave the lot . All you have to do is call you insurance company, from the dealer, and give them the VIN number. You then have insurance. Like I said before, you can insure anything belonging to anyone as long as you have the VIN. You don't have to own it.

Most ins companies have a 30 day grace period to cover additional vehicles that you add. If you have a policy with a deuce on it (and it meets the definition of a "covered vehicle") then your policy should apply. My earlier comments were geared toward someone with just a regular auto policy thinking they would have coverage on a deuce the same as a regular newly purchased car.

No, I meant Class A because technically, if I was lucky enough to drive it home, I would need a Class A to do it (I live in PA).

Now the hard part.. to get a Class A you need to show up in a vehicle that needs a Class A license... yet I (or whomever) may not own a vehicle that big, and rentals are not acceptable for road tests.

Again.. what are the odds of getting stopped vs the cost of paying the fines?
