Howdy! Great Forum and wealth of info! I have learned so much the several months I have been lurking I decided to pass on a tip I use to remove motor pool over spray from nameplates and placards.
The example here was the worst of all the placards on my M35. The rifle mount was installed over it hence the two additional holes on the bottom edge.
I tried a number of chemicals and decided to go the mechanical route after a bit of scraping with may thumbnail proved successful!
All you need is a plastic bucket, Magic Eraser, old cutting board or suitable flat surface and an old credit card or hotel room key.
Here is the process:
1. Soak in HOT water! Hot out of the tap if fine. 5 to 10 mins in a bucket is all you need.
2. Place the cutting board on the bucket and scrape the plate with your card using the flat surface of the board to press against. Hold the card so the edge of the card does the work. The CARC will pop right off.
3. Go over the plate with the magic eraser. Make sure you wet the eraser first.
4. Step back in amazement at your accomplishment!
5. Dispose of the water in the bucket via your preferred choice of environmental directives.
Total time invested 15 minutes! (Soak all your plates and scrape them one after the other)
The trick was to find something that will remove the CARC without scratching the soft aluminum plate. The old hotel room key fits the bill nicely!
Cheers
