Roller lifters?

Perusing the -34 TM, I noticed this. Guess this old engine isn't too archaic. Or it is over-designed.

Roller lifters/tappets only became standard in the middle 1990s when extreme pressure additive ZDDP in oil was reduced to preserve the life of catalytic converters.

If you look at a lot of the old antique diesel and gas hit or miss engines they mostly used roller lifters. They are not a new concept that is for sure.

I know that Rover used rollers on their lifters in both the TC2000 and the land rover engines back in the 60's.....maybe earlier.
They've been in use for a long time as noted. I think the roller rockers are somewhat newer....maybe?
Shaft drive to the cams is another interesting idea. The russians have been using that since the 30's in their tank engines. The T34 engine and its subsequent developments use a quad overhead cam, 4 valve per cyl V12. Who knew they were doing that in the 30's.

Nothing new under the sun.

Not much new going on other than lots of electronics and emission components. The only time something new will happen is the changeover to fuel cell technology. I showed my students yesterday how cool stratified fuel mixtures are made possible with direct fuel injection. Then I showed them how Honda did it back in the 70's and 80's using a rich and lean carb with no computers which enabled them to meet emission standards with no cats.

If you want to see something new you can get, try sitting in on a high school health class...they make a cream for that?
