I've been lurking this site for a year, and now I'm a new member. I've been interested in owning a deuce but can't justify it till my F-350 comes up short with something I a regular basis. I've noticed that Deuce owners really only do one of three mods. Bob it, crew cab it, or big tires/lift it. I go to buggy gatherings here in Alaska and it seems that making a vehicle to stand out from the rest is very important to them. Why don't I see guys modifying the bed other than chopping the stocker or slapping on a m101? No one goes to far away from green, black, or desert for paint. I have yet to see a grill or front face change of ANY kind. Is there a reason for "common" modifications?

Many of us simply appreciate the trucks for what they are, historic military vehicles.

I think it's because a deuce, on it's own merit, already stands out from the rest. As for the modifications, it's generally just to suit the owner's tastes and not just to make the deuce into something it's not. No one (that I know of or even heard of) bought one that didn't already like the green iron look to begin with. No one buys a deuce and says, "I'll bet this will make an awesome XXX; once I chop it, lower it, 4-link it, bag it, put in an awesome stereo, etc., etc.

And, what's wrong with the grill? :mrgreen: The only major body surgery I've seen on here is the late model cabs and fenders off commercial trucks, but I think those were all 5-tonners.

Might be just that it hasn't BEEN done yet. That's all.

I understand that, and agree. The deuce is a cool vehicle. This is just my opinion, and being new it might not amount to much, but why do guys bob them? Besides destroying its ability to do what it was designed to do, it makes them look like oversized 40's era farm trucks. I don't know... I forget his name but a popular member here gave a m911 HET a facelift. Looked cool, stood out... Has anyone tryed giving a m35a3 a facelift? I'd like to draw something up. If the military did a M35A4, what would it look like?

It HAS been done, its just by folks that don't get on here much. Most of us aren't that fond of making our trucks look like a whore, we like trucks that work well. I have put an LDS motor in mine for the power and sound, I put the larger tires on cause I go off road a lot, and I built a crane for the bed to load and unload things easier. That works for me. If you want to chrome a grill go for it. Its your truck do what you want.


I do think that modifying a truck to "fit in" is ignorant though.

Every hobby is like that:

Jeeps: Most common mods are lifts, rims, winches.
Musclecars: Most common mods are wheels, cams/intakes/carbs, exhaust.
Classic cars: Most common mods are a/c, fuel injection, disk brakes.

Most people in most hobbies don't stray far from the norm because the norm is the norm for a reason: It's effective, practical, affordable, etc.

I bobbed mine simply because I like the look and have wanted one ever since I first saw it done a few years ago. In my eyes alone, I like the look of the original deuce configuration (6X6 on 9.00-20), but I think they look even better bobbed. But, I also think that the 5-tons look great as they are. I wouldn't bob a 5T, but to each his own.

Anything or almost anything you can think of has been done to former m.v's. Cruise ebay and you can find some real gems.

For the most part people don't change a deuce into something else other than bobbing. Even then its still obviously a deuce. You don't see many people trying to create a chevelle mustang hybred. It would be a total abortion of a vehicle. The truck is what it is.

Ok let's step back and look at se of the modern steel the military is using. Look at the M1070 and the M1A1 Tank. Two vehicles with two completely different jobs but have a m1070 towing a M1 and they look like they belong together. The MRAP... These things look bad a@@. It was as if the guy who designed Batman's "Tumbler" was given a block of steel and he chiseled these vehicles out. They look up armored even before being up armored. I will draw something up soon, I'm working 7/12's in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay so I will have little extra time. Never the less I will try.

When I had several deuces I did a bob job on one and really liked it. The Boss Lady is still PO'd that I got rid of it.
One modification I seriously considered was making the front end flip forward like the 900 series trucks. I absolutely hated hanging upside down while perched on the fender trying to work on something under the hood.

image.jpgQuick sketch before bed... Basically this is a snub nose design. Everything from the fire wall back is stock Deuce. From the fire wall forward is a Diesel V8 configuration and two split mounted radiators, allowing the grill to be inches from the pully system. The bumper has been recessed as well for better approach angles, with a low mounted winch. Good night all.

There was one member here who did a cab/forward conversion. Also there are several that have been "trimmed" in many areas fo facilitate off roading. Losing the steps, relocating the fuel tank minimizing fenders etc. Look at the FEMTT and SEMTT threads to see what folks are doing to 5 tons and bigger.
