Can anyone tell me how much free travel the rod inside the sprag shifter should have before making contact to the spring , or should I just get a measurement on how far the linkage moves on the back of the transmission and go with that ?

If you get a copy of TM 9-8022 you will open it to page 421 for a diagram of the linkage and on page423 paragraph (C) will explain the adjustment procedure. This manual is a 1954 original G 742 manual and is what I refer to for all of the repairs I do and questions I receive first. If it's not enough info, I move into the TM 9 2320-209-20 series
