Starter replacement starts at paragraph 4-8
You should download the first 8 or so TMs at this site, If you fully read the -10, operators manual I will guarantee you will save money in the long run, getting yourself familiar with the others will also bring you much understanding of how your HMMWV works.
Ask any questions as there are allot of folks here willing to help.
Basically it is like any starter, you fully disconnect the batteries, remove the wires from the starter, unbolt the starter and remove it, only this one you will not be able to hold in place with one hand as you manipulate the bolts with the other.

Maybe a M998 is different but the stock starter is really, really heavy and there is no way a weakling like me could hold up that starter with two hands let alone one hand. So I used a jack and some 4x4 wood to support it so it did not drop like a bomb on my head, which would kill anyone. Watch out for the shims and install them back with the rebuilt starter as you found them.

I also had to replaced the flexplate as I found it was missing teeth. That was a lot of fun too!

I was able to find a shop that rebuilds them locally and if I remember it was like $300 to totally take it apart and replace all wearable items. I kept that as a spare.

But installed this one instead. It has held up well for the last year. No shim necessary with the one below. Just so you know, the one below is not totally sealed like the stock one, but it sure is light and easy to install.
