Swapping out a 900 series transfer case

Well the M923 I got for cheap has decided to become a money pit. After investing in a new rear axle and new fluids I now think I need to replace the transfer case. The is due to a noise that sounds like several cats caught in a cement mixer coming from under the truck in the vicinity of the transfer case. The transmission shifts fine and the truck will get up to speed but it caterwauls when doing so. There is also the smell of gear oil coming from under the truck into the cab.
I did a search and found info on swapping a deuce transfer case but not a 900 series. I laid under the truck today and studied the mounts, lines and linkage that are attached to the case. It looks like it would be easier to pull the bed and spare tire rack off and do it from the top. Especially since I'll be doing it in the yard and not in a shop with a concrete floor. I have a wrecker that I can use to pull the bed and rack off and to remove/re-install the case.
Any insight from the similarly afflicted would be appreciated.

I recently removed a transfer case from a M925A2. I did not remove the bed first, but did have to take the spare tire carrier off. I used a forklift and chain from above - it worked out okay. I wouldn't call it easy, but it was possible.
