Tan CARC part number

I'm looking for the part number on the current tan (desert sand) water-based TWO part CARC. ie-Water-Dispersible or WD CARC
I choose it based on this info:

"WD CARC outperforms solvent-based CARCs in flexibility, weatherability, mar resistance and impact resistance. Water-Dispersible CARC retains its color up to three times as long in outdoor testing."

And to make it more confusing: "There are two types of WD CARC. Type I is better than the original CARC but contains silica-based extender pigments that are almost identical to those used in solvent-based CARC. The extender pigments in Type II are replaced by small spherical beads. These beads are the main reason for the paint's improved performance properties and make it the recommended choice."

So this seems to be the best paint. But what is the part number for: WD CARC (Water-Dispersible), TYPE II, two component, current tan (sand) color??? Thanks

Try calling Sherwin - Williams Cemical coating Dept
They should be able to tell you, and they carry it .
I am not sure if they sell to public ?

I did call my rep (and I spend $750k+ a year with them!) and he said it was kind of confusing due to all the varieties. They sell tons of it out of that branch- but all the military contractors give them the part number specified in their contract- so they have very little knowledge about it...

But I still want to be sure the tan listed is the right one. I've read on our site there are several tan CARC colors (lighter and darker ones), but only one is listed? I guess I can call BAE systems down the road, they use tons (literally) of this stuff.

There is only one Carc Tan that I have ever seen. Carc is only available in Black, green, brown, and tan as far as I have ever seen.

I take that back. I see there is aircraft black and green also. The number for tan listed in the second link is the one you want to ask for. It should come in 5 gallon or 1 gallon containers then you need the part b also.

Water dispersible CARC is one part. The moisture in the air acts as the catalyst.
Two part CARC requires a mix-and-spray part B catalyst and isn't water dispersible.

One part is product # F93H503, "MIL-DTL-64159. CARC, Tan 686A, 33446".
Two part component "A" is product # F93H1, "MIL-C-46168D, CARC, Tan 686A, 33446".

You are confusing two different products. The single component is activated by mosture in the air and this is what you are thinking of. It is still a solvent based paint but the moisture in the air activates it. What he is talking about is the newest stuff that is not solvent based. It is water based and the part a and b are mixed and it is reduced with distilled water. Water is also used for cleanup. This is Water Dispersible (WD) CARC or type II CARC. To make things even more confusing, the oldest card was solvent based and a two part system.

Here is a thread I did with instructions for all three types of carc. The MIL- number tells you what type of CARC you are working with.

You're right, Chuck. I just pulled info on the CARC we have on hand in our paint locker.
There have been several versions of both the two-part and the one-part CARC.
Adding to the confusion are different interpretations of terms like waterborne vs. water dispersible.
Like I said; this is just from MSDS's for the two formulations we currently use and have on hand.

My prediction: SW will stop selling CARC to civilians. HENTZEN COATINGS has long had this policy. I guarantee there is a newbie somewhere who went into a SW dealer talking about how they were going to re-CARC their deuce. Well, that word gets back to management and you have a change in policy. I just called my SW dealer that I have gone through innumerable times to buy CARC and he said that I had to go through their chemical coatings division and he was unsure if they would sell the paint to me. Specifically, he was unsure if they would sell to any non-mil representatives. I don't know for sure that they have changed their policies. They might still sell to civilians. I need to call their chemical coatings division to find out. I am only suggesting that people tread lightly. No need to offer more info than what is needed. My $.02...

Not a single problem with my Sherman Williams. Really surprised that I read so many people that say their SW store gives them issues. However, I guess it is a face to face thing along with the fact they have multiple dealings with Ft. Knox (Gov. contracts) but all is in their lists. SW offered me multiple options but in the end decided with USMC Forest green (thanks to M109guy). Load up with the appropriate TM TB43-0139 (from this site under resources) and walk into yours with all the info. Also check other peoples vehicles out with the tan colors you want (or sand).

This is what Sherwin-Williams 33446 CARC Tan looks like. I applied it with the $15-20 gun form Harbor Freight and then threw the gun away. The results are not body shop but alot better than many field applications I have seen.

NDT, it's not a near instantaneous change from workable to hard like Bondo. It's just not good to open a gallon of CARC to do spot painting or touch-ups. (They put out a kit with a throw-away aerosol "rattle-can" for that).
I'm looking into RAPCO's CARC substitute myself for my own stuff since I rarely encounter gas or chemical attacks in my neighborhood (unless you count our twice-annual chili cook-off).

With the two-part CARC you just don't mix more than you need. Each part needs the other to start the hardening process.

The one-part is a little trickier. It's not recommended to even stir the stuff when opened because that can "fold" air/moisture into the paint.
We use a paint shaker, pour the paint into the pot and immediately close the can. THEN, we store the once-opened paint cans upside down. When we turn the cans back over to do more painting, any surface skinning has formed on the "bottom" of the paint and we have fresh, liquid paint to draw from.

The Gillipsie (Rapco) CARC substitute in 383 green looks marginal. The shade and gloss does not match and it does not have the sandpaper texture of the real stuff.

My question is: For those of us wishing to paint the occasional truck, which of the 3 types of Sherwin Williams CARC will give us the least grief. This stuff is too expensive to have a painting disaster. I am using a pressure pot in hot humid climate. Someone who has gone down this path please chime in . . .

Single part CARC from SW. NO mixing required. I am no painter by any means and even I was able to do this.

My truck looks just like that (minus the green)- It was only released a few months back and has CARC that is less then 4 years old- But it needs touch-up, so I'm respraying the whole truck.

Numbers-
Whats the difference between tan and sand color- This is what confuses me! The current paint part numbers don't list "sand" only tan, but the people at the base all call the current mid-east color sand??? Which I think is the tan- but don't want a bunch of the wrong color...
