I just picked up a 1986 M1009 and have a few basic questions. First what's the shift pattern for the transfer case? Do I need to shift to neutral on the column before I shift to 4H or 4L? Secondly the tail gate appears to be locked or not working how can I check this? I would experiment but it's 27 years old and don't want to start off buy messing things up. Thanks.

The truck is a basically a stock K5 Blazer.

Download the free technical manuals for the CUCV trucks. The link is at the top of the page.

You need to reveiw the TM 9-2320-289-10 Operators Manual. It will give you the basics of how your truck should operate.

Since you will also need to lock the axle hubs, I would shift to 4wd when you are stopped.

The window crank on the Blazers is a sore spot for many owners. The cheap pot metal that is used breaks when least expected. You may need to take off the inside panel to roll the window down.
