Transmission down shift grind?

Has anyone come across a down shift grind that only occurs in 3rd gear?

Mine does as well. A friend of mine who used to rebuild trans says it's probably worn synchromesh. When I gear up I double clutch and it usually gets past the grinding. On the way down sometimes it won't even go into 3rd. At some point I'm just going to bite the bullet and pull the sucker and do a rebuild.

All of the Klondike gold in the bottom of this Mutt transmission is the 3rd gear synchro.

What fluid does everyone have in their trans? Does it stink, GL5? Or not, GL1?

I just use run-of-the-mill 80w90 gear oil.

So due to some other threads I've been following I've decided to switch over to Pennzoil 75w90 GL-4. Apparently GL-5 oil is bad for standard tranny's because it eats softer metals such as syncros.

This is a hottly debated topic on the Spicer transmissions. A lot of gl5 is yellow metal safe. The transmission was designed for gl1 and my trans shifts nice with it which is why I use it. All gl1 is safe. I don't know much about the gl4 so I can't comment on it. Good luck.

I use GL1 90w from Napa. They have it in gallon jugs only.

I found GL-1 in gallon jugs at Tractor Supply labeled for Ford tractor transmissions 1939 through 1952 cheaper than GL5.
