We had MEP-003 10kw
then we had MEP-803A 10kw
we now have MEP-1040 10kw

Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources represent the third generation of Department of Defense military standard generators. AMMPS are replacing second generation Tactical Quiet Generators, which have a 25 year old design, and providing significant operational improvements that greatly decrease the logistics footprint on the battlefield. The current family of AMMPS consists of five versions: the 5 kW, 10kW, 15kW, 30kW, 60kW generators. The AMMPS family:

  • Delivers fleet weighted average of 21% improved fuel efficiency over legacy systems
  • Increases reliability (750 hours mean time between failure), maintainability, and transportability
  • Reduces infrared signature and noise (less than 70 decibels at seven meters)
  • Provides 52% commonality of parts across all sizes of AMMPS
  • Incorporates military ruggedized commercial components
  • Minimizes weight by 10% over previous generation, as well as minimizes size;
  • Improves maintenance intervals (500 hours for 5 kW, 10kW, and 15kW; 750 hours for the 30kW and 60kW)
  • Reduces electromagnetic interference; electromagnetic interference protected
  • Improves sustainability; operates at rated loads in all military environments
  • Is capable of starting and operating on common fuels (diesel/JP-8 ) in extreme climatic and tactical military environments
  • Meets Environmental Protection Agency Tier IV Interim Compliance
  • Includes built-in diagnostics/prognostics for troubleshooting
  • Features automatic paralleling and synchronization; simple two button parallel

Some of the models use a PMA with an inverter instead of a brusheless alternator. This allows the engine to run a variable speeds based on load. More like the MEP831a.

None of the AMMPS units have a PMA or Inverter
The 5, 10 and 15 kW's use a Cummins generator and the 30's and 60's use a Marathon generator.

Thats a bummer. The development info suggested the smaller units would be PMA/inverter based.

I didn't get to see inside the 10kw unit so I was still going on second hand info.

Sounds good, but let me say, Iv been off grid 23 years since I retired, I got 57 thousand hours out of a 22 kw Mitsubishi powered gen set, only changed a water pump. Pulled engine for a rebuild was in great shape still, probably didn't have to, was still running well. Run a tier 4, 33 kw John deere diesel as my secondary, Has 3000 hrs ,alresdy had to change the fuel control solenoid, $ 700.00 , only last 1.2 years. Deere starts well but smokes a white cloud large enough to hide A C-5 (aircraft) for 3 to 5 minuets on most winter starts . Picked up a 3 kw onan powered Mep 016 , really will easily push 5 kw , now that ive changed all the carb and fuel pump, fuel lies ect runs well , but don't think its going to rivial the mitsu

The money line in OP info "Environmental Protection Agency Tier IV Interim Compliance".

IE: the EPA runs the DOD when the wackos run the gov't.

Tier 4 interim compliance is not necessarily that complicated. But that only gets you to 2012, I believe. It is the tier 4 full compliance after that where you see more annoying add ons like DEF or catalytic exhaust with burn cycle.

This speaking from my experience with small (30-60 HP) diesel machines I have in my business. I repowered a skid steer with a Mitsubishi S4S that was sold to me new and cheep because it past 2012 mark without being installed in a new machine. It is the last of the mechanically injected, no DEF or afterburn motors I'm ever likely to acquire new. My 2015 mini skid has a 37 HP Yanmar, and it has a catalytic exhaust with burn cycle. It has not been an issue so far, but ****, that is one complicated engine compartment, I do not look forward to working on it.

Howdy,

A lot of it comes down to the horsepower rating of the engine. Not every horsepower rating is under tier 4 compliance.
