What is the function of the Gen 2 diode?

What exactly does the gen 2 diode do? I am refering to the one behind the voltmeter. My Gen 2 bulb glows dimly at idle, however my alt 2 puts out at 14.7. I just cleaned the relay. I have a rebuild kit for the alternator, I just want to learn the system more throughly. Where can I purchase a new diode if need be?

i wish i knew i have the same problem dim gen 2 light, but mine a hair away from over charging. im trying to figure it out but not tonite its in the high 20's out there i think it can waittill the weekend when i fix my washer motor

Typically a diode passes current on only one direction and blocks current on the other direction as long its breakdown voltage is not exceeded.
