Hey , I need some help here. Im looking at purchacing a M38a1. Thier are two to choose from both in about same condition.About same price,(withen 200 .00 of each other.
My question is wich will be worth more when I get done with a frame off resto?

When you say 1st or 2nd edition, do you mean M38 and M38A1?

Or do you mean clamp or thumbwheel battery box? Or 1952 to 55 or late 60's production run?

Thumb wheel or clamp battery box.
I think the hinged grille of the early A1 makes it very slightly more desireable, but the 8 thumbscrews to get to the batteries is a bit of a pain. I would buy based on which had the better body tub.

After about the 2nd or 3rd time going into the battery box, you might have wanted the later one. One of the few, Frank USMC RET

After looking at theNEWER one it needs a clutch and secound gear is sticking!
So its off to get the older one and put new batterys in and new cables , so I dont have to return to the box
