Where's the Land-Rover Section?

Why is there no forum for Land-Rovers on Steel Soldiers?

I find it astonishing that there are sections on this forum for all sorts of Military vehicles, including virtually unheard of Eastern bloc trucks, like Tatras etc., but yet there is no Land-Rover section?

The Land-Rover is one of the most prolific Military vehicles in history, probably used by more Western and NATO countries than even the Jeep, yet there is no forum for them? The UK, Australia, the Dutch, Danish, the Belgians, and Israelis use the Land-Rover. Even the US Army uses Land-Rovers (the Ranger's RSOV being a good example). The Military Land-Rover has been in near constant production longer than most any other single brand of Military vehicle, including the Jeep.

The Land-Rover has fought in Vietnam, Falklands, Both Gulf wars, Israel, Rhodesia and Myriad Bush wars in Afrika. And if I remember correctly, there were a couple of Military Land-Rovers at last Autumn's Steel Soldiers GA rally. Yet I saw no Russian trucks, Tatras or other wierd off-brand enemy hardware... Heck, there weren't even any Unimogs or Pinzgauers there. But the Land-Rovers were there.

So what gives? Is there some hidden hatred of our Allies' vehicle on Steel Soldiers?

Ok, I'll calm down now.

Hi Garret,
I can understand that your Land Rover might not want to be relegated to:

"Other non-US MV's"
:-D

Maybe there needs to be a critical mass of Land Rover postings before it makes sense to establish a dedicated forum? So, start by telling us all about your 1971 1/2 Ton!
From your avatar, looks like a great vehicle. Give us some pics!

I for one, would love to see more Land Rover threads.
Cheers,
B B

I am in agreement with the notion of all the other less popular foreign MVs. Managing all the forums we have is a daunting task. My suggestion would be to make a single forum for all foreign wheeled MVs and get rid of these little forums. I would also suggest narrowing the armor forums to just tracked and wheeled. Can't for the life of me figure out why we have a Bradley forum.

That's pretty much my point. Why all the forums for these obscure vehicles that never even fought on our side?

Just here in my little part of East Tennessee, I know of at least 6 Military Land-Rovers within 10 miles of me, not counting mine. Yet I've never even heard of a single Tatra, Volvo or Ural in the whole freekin state. Yes, there are a handful of Unimogs and Pinzgauers, but there are thousands of Ex Military Land-Rovers in the USA.

I've thought about this since I first joined SS years ago, and have always just justified it by the fact that there are already many excellent forums dedicated to Military Land-Rovers, and so who cares if SS supports them. Military Land-Rover owners are very lucky in this respect, as compared to most Military vehicles. This is something that I'm learning with my new Dodge WC.

I personally think there are enough MOD Rover's out there that we could give them a forum, but that's a decision that's above my rank.

Can't for the life of me figure out why we have a Bradley forum.
I have always thought we had some strange forums like that. I definitely think we could cull them down and make room for some more common stuff like the LRs.

I will be rolling a lot of the forums into each other this week. Perhaps it's just me, but this is the first rover discussion I know of here. A lot of the foreign MV's will roll into that catch all.

The Danish Armed Forces uses the landies sparingly. We have very very few still running and in operation. They proved too expensive and not suited a long time ago. Most of the few that remain are garrison security issue and not speched out with camoflage etc. Generally speaking the danish forces would/wll get 3 Mercedes Geländewagons for every landrover they bought.... more or less. And like I said, the ones I have seen recently have been old vehicles either up for auction, or some parked in a garage right outside where the base security houses it on-station soldiers.

From what I hear the Mercedes Benz G-Class is a lot more hard wearing then the Landies and are just overall cheaper to keep and maintain.

But I agree, through its operational history it has sorta become an iconic vehicle much like the willy's jeep through its many adaptations etc.

I find it " astonishing " that a guy who starts the very first thread on a truck and actually " cant believe " there are no others ... Maybe thats just me, :) But I do remember replying to someone a few years ago that such a truck was mentioned , That the very first one was the best one ever produced in my opinion because it had a Willys drive train and frame :):):) ... Sorry couldn't resist that one again :) Yhe poll seems like the way others do it ...

Oh my... Shall I, shalln't I....

Yes I agree that there MAY be a few other LR types that grace these pages, but what will you gain? Yes, you will have something that most won't have ever seen before, may have heard about, read about etc. But the purpose of joining a forum is to further your own interest, using such site as a resource, and to provide answers to those that don't know, who ask... Then you can venture forth your knowledge of the obscure (and by obscure I mean the uncommon not wired etc.) rather than blow your own trumpet that most 'won't hear'.

I have had ex MoD Rovers (amongst others) for over 35 years, still have two that I brought to the states many years ago. I was membership sec for the 101 club (a Rover 1 tonne) and am still a member of that club along with the ExMilitary Land Rover Association and use both their forums. I also go on the Historic Military Vehicle Forum based loosely in the UK/Europe and now I also go on an Australian MV forum... They all have their place, each has its own 'characters', politics, cliques, rules, foibles and querks but they each have a very knowledgable membership who are mostly like minded. Before I bought a US "M" truck - I came to S/S for that very reason. Not much point looking for M816 info on a forum that may only have one other person on it when there is another forum that has over 60 of them and hundres of similar trucks etc..

You, or I for that matter, can witch and bhine over wanting a specific forum on S/S for Rovers, but to what end? You don't go to Wally World for Porsche parts. There are already a load of forums here that are pretty obscure - and others that are too broad and 'all encompasing' resulting in the ever so diluted searches.
Personally - I like the "mom n pop" feel, like a familiar specialist store rather than the 'one of everything' mega mart.

I am not trying to shoot you down - crikey, I love Rovers, but I think 'time and place' an appropriate phrase. So, go ahead, do the poll - I'll vote yes just 'cause I have 2, but will be surprised if there is enough to swing the mods to dedicate one specifically.

So long as you put Land Rover in the title of the posting- which ever forum is appropriate - those of us that are interested will see it, you can bet on that!
Would love to chat to you about your LtWt - I sure am living a lonely "Rover" existance where I am! That's why I have a Rover do at our farm every Guy Fawkes - they come in from all over!

Please don't kill Bradley.

;-)
For being so fond of the forum bearing your namesake, I see that you have posted there once this lifetime.

Besides killing Bradley, how do you think I feel. Any idea how many times I've been killed on Southpark?

See, people here do care about Rovers! All this time I had felt insulted when I logged in and saw forums for all sorts of Commie rigs and the like, but nothing for the ubiquitous Military Land-Rover.

Like I conceded already, I really don't think there is a need for a Land-Rover forum here, there are already excellent ones out there, and SS really doesn't have a chance to compare in that respect, just like they can't really compete with forums for the G503.

There, it's off my back and I feel better and it will no longer bother me when I show up at the SS Rally and park next to all of those Tatras, Urals, Volvos and ...Bradleys. :)

Thanks for support. Regarding the G-wagens, all I can say is that Denmark must have got one a heck of a deal if they bought 3 G's for the price of a single Land-Rover. Someone definitely got cheated somewhere!
