Winch Chain Length

I recently purchase a deuce that came with a winch but no cable or lead. I purchased a cable and lead assembly from John Murray and it arrived today. (See attached photo) The length of the chain from spelter to hook is 32" which I believe is too short. The chain links are 2 1/2" long and 1/2" in diameter. My questions are: What is the proper chain length not including the hook and spelter and can I splice additional links in the current lead if necessary. :?:

This puppy is big. The link is 2 1/2" in length and the diameter of the link er is 1/2" which is the same diameter as the cable. If your link width is 2 1/4", what it the link length. The end links on my lead are much larger as shown in the picture.

looks right to me. the chain isn't as long as I'd have liked it to be tho, ideally you dont want the hook on the wire (somthing about kinks and weakening ect) but most trees big enough to provide the needed support are too big.

Attached is a pic I just took of an NOS deuce winch chain. Use this for comparison. It's photographed next to a 48" drywall square. Looks like 49" OAL.

I'm no tree hugger but please get a tree strap and not wrap the chain around a tree trunk. The chain will bite into the tree bark and possibly kill the tree and the "tree-huggers" will use this against us and all responsible off-roaders to get public orv areas shut down.

i have only been using it to pull dead trees out of private land so far. i dont do much wheeling either so not a big concern for me, an observation and nothing more. good recommendation though, even if not for the tree do it for the sake of your equipment.
