Video exemplifies why the public needs HMMWVs

Being a rookie and not having dealt with Government Liquidation before, I don't know but does that video imply that HMMWVs are hard to get? I have seen some at the Iola (WI) Military & Gun show being offered for sale, but they tend to be early models from the 1980s. What about General Motors? They used to sell Hummers which were civilized versions of the military ones. I think they don't make them any more though and the one Hummer dealer I knew of has gone out of business.

They are restricted from public sale. Most of the real ones in public hands are the early prototypes or leftovers from production companies. Very few that are publicly owned were ever in military service... They get destroyed when the military is done with them.

I believe the above to be WRONG, there was a MAJOR MARINE sale back a few years, a lot of those ended up in public hands, right after these sales is when the DEMIL rule came in-affect

73m19 is correct. I was at the auction lot twice in Riverside, CA circa 1999. You had to be a dealer to buy one. 13K for non-runners and 17k for runners.

Define "major". There isn't a major amount of them in public hands counting prototypes.

I beleive 500 or so, though I have been known to be wrong before, ask my X, she KNOWS everytime. There was a nice write up in MVmag on these sales

anytime even one goes up for sale to the public now, it would be a major sale

Well that certainly isn't a HMMWV. If it needed a Goat and a Dodge to get out then it makes me wonder if it's a real Jeep.

I turned it off was afraid of sucking water in the intake! Better to be pulled out than trash a engine!

An excellent article by Denise Moss appeared in the June 2003 - issue #97 of Military Vehicles Magazine. It gives an introduction to HMMWVs. Included in the article is the following quote: "... in 1999 when the...marine corps traded 750 HMMWVs to United Defense... contracted the sale through Manheim Auction Government Services." So there are more than 750 out there anyways. Mine was one of the ones from the auction. There are a few on E-bay right now and a few more are available at sites listed on the MVPA. In fact, serial # 29, a 1984 HMMWV prototype is available on one of those sites. AM General made the civilian H1 series that used the military drive train, frame, and stuff and just added a 12v system, safety mods, fancy dash panel, and upholstery. Oh, and the Hummers made by GM ? They're just a pickup truck with a HMMWV looking body. It was the GM line that got sold to China - not the AMG military ones.

rich is correct. I was at the first sale in Atlanta. There were 750 there and more in Cali. They wouldn't sell any truck for less than $15k, regardless of condition at the first sale. They had a couple more sales where they let the junkers go cheaper. I think they added a few more to the pile later. The de-mil was in effect long before that sale. The de-mil magically started just after the first gulf war when the public discovered the Humvee and AM General started selling them. I know people who bought them at DRMO auctions in the '80s and drove them home.

The hummer name was not sold to china. It did not go through. The brand is dead. The military HMMWV is still being produced.

The HMMWVs you see rolling around are genuine military issue trucks. 99.99% are from the Atlanta and riverside auction Marine Corp units.
