Member Map Enhancement Suggestion

Wouldn't it be cool if every member was required to enter their zip code so that you could see where everyone was in relation to each other and not just have it as a voluntary thing? Then if you were organizing a rally you could PM everyone within a X Mile radius of the rally and possibly get more attendance.. That would be cool, hope I am not the only one in my area with a deuce.. but I have not seen any around..:(

I've been through this a few times. I can make it a required field. But I can't retroactively make it required to the site. Second, I can't verify in any way that's the person's real zip code. Third, how can I demand everyone to disclose their location? You'll find the group is very splintered when it comes to disclosing location and possessions. Fourth, the googlemaps uses coordinates, not zip codes, so a new system would have to be coded. One that would only plot users to the center of there respective ZIP.

Yeah I figured I would hear concerns like these.. just wish I had a few guys around me that I could meet up with from time to time.. have a beer and talk shop on the trucks.. Totally understand though.. Got to stop by and say hello to the guy that has the CUCV near me though.. I figured if I roll by his house in the deuce and stop for a min perhaps he'll stick his head out...

if you want to organize a rally the just post it. i have either meet or PM'd most of the MV owners in my area without this. we already have our cities in our bios.

Not to get off the main subject here but I've tried to post a picture on my entry on the map. Can't figure it out, can't find directions on how to do it. I've searched every way I can to find a thread on how to add a picture. Where did I miss it? I noticed some on the map do have pictures so I know it's possible, just not with my computerabilities. Thanks in advance!

Under the forum rules, SS members are required to list their State. I would recommend changing the location requirements to include the following. 'All members are encouraged to enter their location on the Member Map, although this is an optional requirement.'

I had to remove the image blank. I had so many users trying to copy their map coordinates or c:\My Documents\Pictures\IMGXYZ.jpg that kept corrupting the xml file. I didn't go in retroactively and remove images.

If it was optional I don't think that most users would have an issue with it. I just use a general part of the state I live in but know a bunch of FMV owners from this site alone. The logistics of this are a completely different issue and I don't know anything of it.

On a similar topic if there could be a portion in the item description of classifieds that listed locations of the items that would be very helpful. For me an items in reasonable driving distance peaks my intrest far more than items that are days away IMHO. Just minor tweeks to a very well run site.

I plan on tweaking the classifieds a little more. I'd like to divide up the title into segments and have location and price required fields.

Can you set up the we site map to automatically give a location when each person logs on to the SS site ?
Please see my previous post #3 in this thread.

What about when you click on a person on the map list, that person comes up on the map instead of the total map population, if not no big deal, thank you

:tin hat: it just may be the fact i left my foil hat and meds at home today, but, since i first read this it has been bugging me. do you work for the secret service, FBI (some sort of LEO) or the UN being you only live 1 1/2 hours from down town NY? with less that 100 post you come on here trying to force us to put our place on a map. like i said our location is part of your user ID. i have really been trying to let it go but i just had to get it off my chest. if you had been a member for years with a bunch of posts i don't think i would feel like this. maybe i need more " Platypus Tranquilizers"

in my 20's i drank with a FBI agent who would make comments like that at our parties and get the people there to think spilling their guts was a "cool idea". i finally told him to stop or he would not be invited back. we had a few stupid people but no criminals. he said sorry it was just a habbit from work and all was better. :tin hat:

Sorry, dude didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.. just thought it would be cool to have your location link to the map.. if you don't enter your location then your not on the map.. again sorry I can see how you could view it otherwise.. Didn't suggest forcing anyone to do anything with me and my less than 100 posts.. sorry again just excited as I am new to the hobby...

when i was in the ARMY i was Military Intelligence for 3 years and i was sent to a school to teach us about other people gathering intel (cause that was our job not theirs). we were required to report anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. that was 20+ years ago and somethings just catch my attention, and i have to report it. now that i got it off my chest i am all better, well that and the " Platypus Tranquilizers"
