Hi guys,

I just have two simples question;

What is the advantage of doing the "Spin-on fuel filter mod"?

Also, is there any disadvantages of doing the mod?

Thank you,

:ditto:

I live in southern California, so I didn't need a fuel heater. No disadvantages for me, especially because I had the stock filter base that I could not keep from leaking.

I did the spin on filter mod and have had no issues without the heater. If your glow plugs work correctly it will start fine even in a cold climate. I have plenty of 15 to 20-degree mornings with no starting problems.

I recently installed a clear 10 micron prefilter in front of my canister. I like being able to see the fuel, and it's movement. I may add a pressure gauge in the future.

I was asked why I installed the pre-filter- I run low %s of WMO to offset fuel cost. It is filtered to 5 microns before use and I have never had any problems. Should I ever, the pre filter will clog first due to size and being in front of the main filter. I can remove it from the loop, and bleed much easier vs. pulling the canister on the highway. If I had an electric fuel pump and no WMO, I would probably not run the prefilter.

The canister is more readily available and fiters better than the factory cartridge, and does not leak. It was installed on my truck by the Forestry Service when I bought it. Downside is the water in fuel sensor function is also lost along with the fuel pressure switch- used for diagnostic testing only.

I bought a Racor filter kit on eBay not long ago to replace the leaky original unit in my M1009. I haven't gotten around to installing it yet. I don't expect to miss the heater here in Southern California, and the hand primer pump looks like it'll be a nice feature. The thing is kinda big. If it works well for me, I might consider one for my HMMWV, too, since it uses an uncommon filter element.

Where did you get that base

Hey Matt65, Where did you get that base/what is it etc? I really like the top feed and bleeder right there. Very simple and compact.

It was on the truck when I got it. I'm not sure where it came from. It has worked well so far. I like the extra out port, this is where I have considered adding a pressure gauge. My next canister (from Napa) due to go in will also have a bottom bleeder for water.
