Tranny won't shift and stuck in place

Hello all,

I was shifting from 1st to 2nd and the stick had a bit of resistance,,but it happens quite a bit. I then let out the clutch and the tranny seemed to bined and the truck almost stalled as it slid to a halt, very quickly! I took off the top of the tranny and the forks are not bent /damaged to my knowledge. I then put it back together and the shifting pattern is messed up or the gears just bind up or I have one gear to move then it disapears.

This is my daily ride and I have no idea where to go from here.

Thank you,
Jeremy

you could have a syncro sticking or a gear that seixed on the main shaft from lack of lube .if one of the gears is working and all the others dont .the gear that is working is the one that is messed up.cuz the others are free and thats why it works in that gear and when you come out of the gear that works it is trying to be in two gears at once causing it to bind or lock up

My transmission was giving me trouble too. The guys recommended draining the trans, check for any metal, Pump in Automatic transmission fluid, put transfer case in neutral, put trans in 1 gear, Let out clutch and run for 30 min. Drain, refill with 85-90. This fixed mine. stopped the howling and it shifts easier too.

Hi there,

Just bought an M35a1, and I'm finding it impossible to select 1st gear, all the others work just fine, I spoke to the previous owner who informed me he never used that gear so couldn't comment!
He did tell me that he found the connecting op rod that runs from the transmission to transfer box was missing so he installed one, this I was told disengages front axle when shifting to reverse gear? Is there any relevance here maybe?
Anyway, looking for any advice on loss of first gear? Have searched through forum and this seemed most relevant, only got truck yesterday and no TM yet.. But reluctant to start a new thread or ask any DUMB questions!

Thanks in advance...

Daniel.

When you try to put the lever in the first gear, does it grind, or does it just not go into the slot or what? The TMs for your transmission are downloadable here on the main page, just look under "deuce TMs" then you will see the one for the transmissions. All I can think of is to take off the top cover and see if your forks are all on track, and if they are, you might have a problem with the gear itself, and the TM will definitely be of use. I have no idea if the control rod between tranny/transfer disengages the front, but that sounds plausible, but i seriously doubt it has anything to do with 1st gear. just my 2 cents, and I am by no means a master mechanic.

If the original owner never used first, the shaft that it slides on could be rusted in place. I would pull the top of the trans and have a "look see".

My first duece would not go into first without grinding and the trans was a rebuilt piece installed by the military upon futher inspection ,ie pulling trans I discovered the last mechanic forgot to install a pilot bearing. When I pushed the clutch I suppose the main shaft would drag the hole in the middle of the flywheel being not supported on the end and would drag enough it would not go into first unless I shoved it hard. I knew better but still did and that lead to 3 missing gear teeth which lead to pulling trans. And that lead to me being 500 bucks poorer than I was.

Well, just to update...

Removed the retainer bolts holding the gearbox floor panel which were all loose and well greased... Someone has been in here recently!

Took the top off the tranny to see if I could see any reason why 1st gear refuses to select... Everything inside looked like new.. Teeth good, syncros good, so got the top on the bench. Noticed middle selector fork was quite worn and shafts a little rusty from sitting in a german yard for several years no doubt! Found a refurb top complete under the bench! So a good clean and this was reinstalled atop the tranny and hey presto.... 1st gear!

Problem solved? Not quite... Soon as I hooked up the Transfer reverse shift rod, no 1st gear again, some adjustment later and 1st gear but no reverse now...
All very puzzling and after several hours very frustrating so on to ss website to check through TM and low and behold the reverse shift rod should have a spring load system included whereas the truck has a solid fixed rod with adjustment one end!
Incorrect part causing me all these problems and also making the previous owner pull away in 2nd gear for two years! Hes never come across the reverse to first rule either(I have now thanks to searching the forum!)
So it's front prop shaft off for the time being till I can locate the correct transfer reverse shift rod.. By the way, if any of you guys can help me out here and would be willing to ship me one of these, take off would do just fine, then I gratefully pay the. Costs involved... Please let me. Know if you can?,!!
Other than that, a big thanks for the help and great source of info this site has provided me.

Dan.
