Sorry, but I asked that question while in Mech School and an instructor told us they wer used during the manufacture of the frame and chassis. Wver notice how on some trucks the paint runs are upside down. that is because they built the boggies and springs and then had to flip the assembly while on the line. The handle wer for the assemblers to man handle the frames as the were righted before the rest of the powerpack was installed. That is my story and I'm sticking to it.:doghead:

I told ya, that is my story and I'm sticking to it. If it was on an assembly line, me thinks it may have been some sort of rotiserie that the frame was attached and the hand hold were to rotate it. That was my understanding. And that was way before my drinking age.

They may not serve a huge purpose on the deuce but they make great tie down points on trailers, work well with flat buckle ratchet straps and it situated correctly work great as handles on toppers, grills etc. I have them on the sides of my steel toppers as lift points and tie down points for rooftop cargo. Also have them on the back as a handle to help with entry. I've seen them bolted to deuce grill guards as an assist handle and on the hood as a handle. They are very useful in other applications too. Just 2 half inch holes and you have it "handled".

I used the front two recently for tie down points. I am posting the pic here in order to get yelled at.

You should get yelled at, and fined. Of all the other correct tie downpoints on that truck and you chose those weak little handles? Who do you haul for so I know who not to call when I need something moved.

He has an '87 so it has the huge, forged handles. Waaaaaay different than the little ones all the older trucks have.

They still ain't no tie down points. That is what those ringy things hanging on the bumper are for. And I still don like not "x"ing the chains but it seems we had this discussion. BTW I rigged many vehicles to RR cars back in the day. Never heard about loosing one either.

Guys, they are the secondary tie downs. They are rated at 10,000# each. Not lift points but tie-down only.

Hopefully the attached page from the transportability guidance manual will cover this.

Yes but tie downs for what? Tying down the truck or tying down equipment to the truck? Which manual did you pull that from?

Secondary for tying the vehicle down. Transportability guidance TM is TM-55-2320-209-15

Ok maybe I am just missing it but I just looked thru that TM and a few others (which on the 2.5t dump list those tiedowns rated at 695#) and I can not find any reference showing the vehicle being tied down with those handles. The only reference I can find is in the Air transportability guide that I posted back on page 5 showing those handles as a place to tie stuff to the truck and to hold the honeycomb cardboard in place for air-drops.

Im not here to argue. I would just like to see someone point me to a definitive reference to using those for tying down the vehicle.

There is absolutely no way they are under #700. Got to be a typo.

Considering what I've done with them, I would agree. I checked 2 different transportability guidance TMs and came up the same. There are days I wished I'd not given my ORD9 away.

Not... or it would repeat itself too often...!

695 lbs or 315 Kg (rated capacity) is what they specified for each and every one, on all twelve of the 2.5ton truck variants, here... (just click where it says "side elevation", for each model)

Kenny, you mean the one book you gave me last year...? the ORD 9 SNL G-742 from Jan1955, with all the perfect photos and descriptions...? It's the best parts-book I've ever had!:)
Just checked it, on this matter: description only says: BOLT, "U", tie down, P/N 7373215

Darn, I thought it would say more. Yes, that's the manual Gerhard but that copy is not the only one I've had. I've given 2 other ones away and trust me, another one will fall into my lap. They always do. Enjoy that piece, its in great hands with you!
