It is mechanical. It will break at some point.

Maybe it was exposed to a EMP.

At least you caught it before you reinstalled everything. Most people won't test the rotor.

Oh yeah I understand that!

Yeah thankfully I did. That would have been dreadful to have to take her down again once it's fully rebuilt.

I put out some emails to a few possible sources of rotors. I'll get back to you on the status later if I find one. In the mean time, I'll rebuild the GEN1 alt. Hopefully it goes smoothly.

Thanks,
Will

Is there a method to clean the alternator cases when you have it apart? By that i mean the outside of the case, to make it all nice and new looking? I would like to be able to do this at home, and no, I don't have a media blasting cabinet. I asked once before, and the suggestion was to take it to an rebuild shop and ask them to blast it for me.

Well I just used my ultrasonic cleaner to first clean it, then I took the usual toothbrush and lestoil and cleaned it that way. That made it clean, but it wont make it like a corrosion free freshly cast surface. If you want to polish it to make it shiny, or at least lessen the normal case corrosion, just use some metal polish.

I need a new rotor for the alternator, it is shot. Where or how can I get one, because they dont seem to sell them anywhere. Let me know what the best plan of action would be.

Does anyone have a bad alternator with a good rotor I could buy?

Ok so I think I have a lead on an alternator.

I am rebuilding my driver side alternator now. What is the best way to torque the front pully bolt on? Impact gun or use a wrench and an allen key?

Thanks,
Will

Impact gun is easiest.

Did you find a new rotor?

Ok Ill try that then. I think I'm on for getting a whole other alternator tomorrow. It seems that just the rotor is almost impossible to find, unless you want to spend more than a reasonable amount to get it. I'll just take the rotor out and put it in my original alternator body - I have already cleaned and prepped it.

Driver side alternator done. It is super nice, all new parts, bearings, fresh paint on the pully and fan, nice smooth operation and isolated ground-ness is spot on!

Thanks for all of the help one this one. I'll let you guys know how I make out with the other alternator and "new" rotor.

I cant wait to get these done. I have installed 4 new Monroe Gas Maguns shocks, steering stabilizer, Energy Suspension Poly sway bar bushings, new starter and GP relay, oil change, new Air filter, Cleaned and painted engine bay, grease and lubed everything....It is like brand new, just waiting to be driven.
