M936 Front Winch Issues

Hey all,

Well Biff and I worked out the M936 yesterday, pulling uprooted trees out of the woods and worked out the front, rear winch, and the pulling power. Impressive truck.

Had an issue with the front winch however. The winch will unwind under power, but refuses to move in the wind position. We used the clutch lever to allow pull unspool and locked it back in, to no avail. We are going to open the control access panel to see if the throw on the lever is the issue... but was hoping to find out what other things we should be checking...

And a confession... I also broke the whole front assembly off the winch yesterday trying to drag a tree out! Hate to hurt the old girl, but it sure was fun! Great workout too.

Oh well, got a lot of work done too...

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

One of our fellow members from "Down Under" (raeme) called me the other day and told me about an issue with the fair lead rollers cracking when winding in the winch cable under load....if you have any 5 ton with a winch you should clean the crud off the rollers and check for cracks.

Looks like someone tried to pull the chain through the tensioner, unless the large fairlead roller let go!

Aren't these fun!

I'll get a pic of the tree, but it wasn't anything special... about a 2 ft. thick Osage Orange I believe... we turned the truck around and hitched the rear winch up and drug it right out...

The stinking plate is aluminum... so I'm guessing you're right... at some time someone tired to wind the chain into the winch... maybe that's why it won't winch in???

Anybody with ideas on why the winch won't come in?

Thanks in advance! We did say that while the winch was a disappointment, that truck is awesome! Its quite a sight seeing a 40 ft. tree leaning against another, come crashing down as you winch and then drive the truck away! Fun toys!

It is a hyd drive winch, so HAS to be the control valve, not enough room in the winch drive gear case for the worm gear to out of alignment, if it did, there would be a busted case,.

As far as the broke fairlead, somebody in the past may have doing a SNATCH recovery, or a tree would not come down, so back up fast till things stop, then do it again and again till the required end is achieved, this kind of shock load is not good for any part of the truck, the fairlead with it's leverage design made of a softer metal will not like it even worse then the rest of the truck, so it developed a crack, then the crack found you.

the motor should be a vain motor, if it works one way, should work the other

Well, I went though ALL the winch stuff, nothing about rebuilding the motor so I can find out what kind it is (may have missed it), but I can now REPLACE it in my sleep

I've had 2 of my trucks that wouldnt wind in , both were cable adjustments. I dont like how short the slot in the console is either. There is alot of throw to wind out and not much to wind in. I lenthened the slot on the wind in side and readjusted the cable and it works great. They are very sensitive to cable adjustment , it wont take much.

Cable Adjustment

How is the cable adjusted on the front winch?

Found a replacement front plate thanks to an SS member... but anyone gets them remade in steel let me know... seems that would be a good addition!

side pull from front winch

The aluminum front fairlead on these winches are not strong enough for side pulls I am looking into remaking mine in steel.

Re-man in steel for side pull great idea if planning on that need.
Consider though, the front winch is only designed for self recovery - generally done in a straight line or not much from it (or anchoring for rear winch recovery), so the fair lead is absolutely not strong enough for anything else than as a guide up to +-10deg from straight (rigging/recovery TM has specs)

A simpler answer may be a snatch block frame - as for the rear winch on a Ward laFrance (WWII wrecker and predecessor to M62) - this holds a pulley block out from and inline with the middle of the winch for pulling up to 90deg from truck. I'm sure a couple of brackets would do..... Need I do a "Nuisance" sketch???

All Fixed!

Hey all!

Well BiffJ and I worked on the front winch today... found the following:

1) Winch was dry of gear oil... got that filled.
2) The lever for wind / unwind did not fully actuate the hyd. valve under the truck... once BiffJ adjusted it, it was running fine!
3) Now once my spare parts show, we'll have it back to normal!

Thanks everyone for your help!
