M816, do you think the ATF would leach from the gearbox to the hydraulic system? Maybe Gimp was describing something else, I was referring to putting the concoction in the gear box of the hoist, not the hydraulic side.

M816, yes, each lever was operated separately until the air was purged. I don't think the water has been in the gearbox long, in fact I think I was the one who let it get there... I had the top plug off for a day and it had rained, but didn't thing that much water got in. It was more gear oil than water. I would think the worm gear (which was a dry, clean steel part, likes to flash rust) would have rusted to **** and back if the water had been in there long.

Once the sun starts going down I'm going to pull the worm gear and see if that side of things is working fine. The small reduction gearbox might have an issue in it, who knows.

I'll also pull the swing motor.

Ok, after pouring over the TM's, I figured it might be the load brake. Sure enough, when I pulled the cover off, it was full of water. and the band was rusted solid to the drum. Pried all that off, and the hoist works!

Unfortunately, the last winding jumped the drum, due to the block sheave not working, (no weight) so now I have that mess to contend with, and I have to find another band, if I want to get this hoist working correctly. I tried to have the block chained to the truck, and hoist down/boom up at the same time, but it didn't do it equal and I got my hiccup.

Now I just have to figure out the swing motor. I don't know how I'm going to get the back bottom bolt out, got the other 3 then called it quits for the night.

Good thinking Adam!
Gotta love TMs(and a thinking brain)...:doghead:

Can you post pics of that brake? The picture looks like the front brake wheel on a normal front winch. I wonder if the brakes from a front winch could be the same. Maybe AMGeneral has one from the bed he parted? Or 123Mack.

Eric, I'll take some better pictures of it when I get home. The bed AMG parted out was off a M62 I believe.

I'll dig through the TM's somemore and see if the part # are the same, good call on the winch brake, I might get lucky.

E, you are a bleeding genius!

All they did was flip part 2 the brake housing 180 degrees. The bands the same NSN- 2590-740-9565 PN 7409565

Now I just have to find one!

I could 'borrow' the one out of the front winch if it isn't in that bad a shape until I can get one.

Ok, pulled the swing motor just before the storms hit. The key is fine, the motor is fine, if I turn the sleeve for the motor shaft, the worm gear in the box does not turn. I'm guessing that means the key is missing/fell out/sheared.

The 34p tm shows all the parts, but in none of the TM's does it say how the blasted thing comes apart...

I have an ORD 9 SNL G-742 that shows an exploded view of EVERY part on a deuce. You just need to find that manual for your truck!

lol an exploded view, doesn't say, remove this part first, to access this...

It just says, if you start taking everything apart, this is what it will look like on the bench.

I'd rather not have to remove the whole thing only to discover if I had pulled 6 bolts here I could have removed the shaft and replaced the key while it was still on the truck.

Well, the parts are kind of in a row. I looked at the exploded view of the 3-lever switch.

GOOD LUCK! I guess you are right. aua

Well, she did some work around her finally! Like I said before, without the front sheet metal on, I keep having Mad Max wrecker visions. After driving it today, I feel like finding some spikes and cowhide...

Enjoy!

Ferro, whenever I get depressed about the current state of some repair on my M62 I will be viewing these videos and this thread for inspiration :). Looks like a project.
