Labor Hours for CUCV Injector Pump Replacement

How much hours does it take to replace the injector pump for a 6.2L diesel in a CUCV? I replaced a few in my uniformed days. I know it took a couple of days at the shop, which includes many jaw jacking sessions. I never really did it in a regular flag time shop. I tried searching the forum and various manuals, could not find anything. Unless I was looking in the wrong places.

Couldn't tell you specifically what the books calls for, but I know I did mine in about 3hrs.

Probably more if you want to do it good and proper. I'm sure it needs a bunch of extra service that could be done while you are digging into the IP replacement. Examples: new fuel hoses, rocker cover gaskets, cleaning up any diesel fuel in the valley, etc.

Its not bad, remove intake, ubolt lines at both ends and remove completely, Do the ip gear bolts though the oil fill, then unbolt the ip.

Should be a 1 day job( I work slow and am all over the place all the time)

A few people fully remove all the injection lines to get the pump out. That is not needed though. Follow the directions in the -20 and it will take 2-4 hours. Most of that time difference is getting the 3 bolts for the gear out and back in. If you have somebody to turn the crank while you are looking at the gear with a mirror, the job is much faster. Turning a few degrees, getting up, looking at the gear, laying down, turning a few gears over and over again takes a lot of time.

one2boost, It is real easy for many to read from book and say x time!

Just recently replaced my original IP and took many hours to do so. My estimate for job hours is ten. That includes taking my time to do it right. Many here will help you through delicate operations. Including myself! There are a few procedures that I would carefully complete. Timing IP!

I created a binder of TM pages that applied to job and comenced project. When unsure. Checked backed in on my Thread and advice poored in.

Have a look at the -20s Maintenance Allocation Chart. You will need the -34 to see the details of what needs to be removed and how many. For example, the MAC has 1 hour for injector lines, that is 8 hours for the set. Add in an hour for the intake and an hour for the injection pump for a good day of work to the neophyte.

Sure, you can get by without removing both ends of the lines but be **** careful to not bend any. Getting threads started on bent line can be frustrating.

The MAC may not be too detailed but it is a good start. I just did another harmonic damper R&R, right at 3 hours. And that was with impact wrench this time. IIRC, last time was two hours without power tools but I didn't have any issues getting the pulley bolts off so the fan stayed in place.

If you still have the factory retainers that couple two lines together in pairs, pull the IP with the lines still attached. I loosened them off the IP on the bench, then transferred them onto the new IP on the bench. They lined right up because there is no way to put them on wrong with those couplers on them.

Drop it on as one big spider.

Thanks fellas, I actually forgot about the MAC chart. After all it has been almost 20 years since I actually had to thumb through a mil-spec manual. So 4 hours sounds like a good estimate, with pneumatic tools, probably do it just under 3 hours.

The air tools don't really help much in this case. Only about half the manifold bolts aren't studs with injector lines, fuel lines or something like that on them that need to be moved out of the way. Then of course, none of the IP mounts, injection lines or timing gear fasteners can be done with air.
