Rust on my 923A2

I just picked (last week) up my latest entry a M923A2. After driving it 1400 kms home I got to looking at some strange paint that turned out to be black silicone. I started poking it found out it was covering holes! The holes were indented like damage from shrapnel (hope I spelled that right). They were just covered over with no anti rust treatment. I could not belive it. The truck has never been in private hands so the goverment paid for this "bodywork" as it could be called.

Im going to temp fix it for Im right in the middle of restoring my 1966 M35.

Has anyone seen this type of damage? I will post photos tomorrow.

I brought home an m1008 that had silicone jammed in all sorts of places. Body, bed, vent windows, you name it! Its like the Military's duct tape.

WOW this make me feel better. I thought this was with European trucks and not USA. Its a shame the US goverment paid for this shoddy work. Left is the before. Look at the tape they used as back filler support! I cut out all the "cancer" welded in stainless steel and covered it with fiber glass.

UPDATE ......... Look at these headlite buckets! But behind them all is prefect. Its a mistery how the rust is one place and another nothing.

There are so many possible explanations it is hard to name em all, First of all I doubt the trucks went to a body shop and anybody "paid" for it, second low echelon repairs can be anything just to get the truck back on the road, And is not a worry for them, How rust can be on one spot and not another, is well ... Something you will have to learn from experience I guess, The rust started and if left long enough would have covered it all Just didnt get there yet ;0

The govt likely didn't pay for the shabby body work specifically. Soldiers get paid the same if they're doing "body work", sweeping floors, raking leaves, shooting on a range or keeping peace in Haiti. Although sometimes units have to put in a work order to a civilian run maintenance shop in order to get more complicated repairs done. Ultimately even when a unit turns in a vehicle to a higher level of maintenance the funds only move to another entity within the govt.

Could a Soldiers time, and in turn his pay, be put to better use? Sure. Can the higher level of maintenance use working hours to do a better job? Yep. But the Soldiers and civilians that do the work have to stay busy somehow. At least they attempted a repair. Soldiers often end up as jacks of all trades and masters of none.

Your told to cover up the holes get some paint on it and get on some thing else. We were not the body shop. That would be taken care of the next time it went in for rebuild.

I received a reply from the manager of manitinece Europe (civilian employeed). She said 70% of all work is done by private civilian contracters in Europe. This truck was repaired by a MB dealer in Frankfort Germany at the cost of €15.193,04 less than 1 year ago. This was ONLY body work and nothing else. Plus ONE month after this "work" was done the truck was decomisioned. 15 grand for shoddy work and then they sell it. Something is not right.
She said they are "investigating" the complaint.
Looking at the history of my M923A2 NO soldier ever laid a finger on this truck. Oil changes, greasing, tire changes were all done off base. The blame lies with the goverment not following up on work they pay 5 times over the normal amount and get 100 times less done!

UPDATE...

I am making headway in the rust battle! Plus thanks to Carnac I have found where my truck came from and Im in contact with the base master sargent in charge of maintinence.
