M923A2 VIN question

Hey guys, where is the VIN on the M923A2 trucks? Is it only stamped on the Dataplate, or does it have the number stamped into the frame too? If so, where is it on the frame???

Well, both my M923 and M925A1 have the VIN stamped on the frame under the driverside wheelwell. If your truck has been CARC'd several times, it may be covered.

Good question. I have been looking for it also, can't find it on a M939A2 series. The M939 and M939A1s were made by AM General and those are as Mike said. But the M939A2s are made by BMY not AM General and I think they marched to a different drummer as far as location of the vehicle VINS. If anyone has found it could you post a picture of the location please?

The location is to the right of the steering gear cover on the left frame rail.

The stamping on my frame is illegible. I used a wire brush to clean it off (very gently) and I can read a couple numbers and thats it. Enough for me to establish that I *think* it matches the data plate. An acid etch would lift the numbers but I don't do that unless absolutely necessary. I'm disappointed the stamping is so shallow.

That is exactly the kind of markings on my M931A2. Here is what is on my truck about 6 inches or so behind the steering box cover on the drivers side. The numbers are not even close to the data plate on the dash. The dash plate on the dash is the original I am sure. As I said earlier I have been all over the truck and am having no luck finding the VIN number. Looks like the 123.... number is a part number but after checking the 24-1 and 2 parts manuasl even the 123 number is not the right one for a M931A2, code for an A2 tractor is ZAG.

I have had alot of 939 series trucks,some of them the #s are easy to read,some arent there at all.They should be right by the steering box.As in the above pic.

Were any of them A2s? Made by BMY? AM Generals are easy to find. I have always been able to find the chassis VINs on my M211s, M34s, M35s,M818s etc but this BMY booger is something different. First time in 54 years that I cannot find the darn chassis VIN. I am about ready to accept that they did not put a chassis VIN on the BMYs.

I have the same issue. The numbers on my data plate are totally different than what is stamped on the truck by the steering box. Not sure which to use for my sf97 form.....

I covered this before but it's been awhile. If you ever plan to legally sell the truck or after you passing for a relative to take ownership or sell the truck, you MUST go off of the frame. In my life I've run into those unscruplious supply or motor sergeants that would switch dataplates if the property book didn't match or something was lost or any number of other reasons. This is another reason why I state in the vin info thread that you are to provide me the vin off of the frame not the dataplate. If you title your truck off of the dataplate, you're rolling the dice.

It should come with the SF 97 if you don't have that form you may be in trouble I tried to register my truck yesterday with just the bill of sale . I was told it wasn't going to happen. So taking the great advice that the guys gave on this very over discussed thread I hope you have the right forms and matching numbers

I have not submitted the sf 97 yet but I will use the vin off the frame as you suggested. The only problem with that is I cant make out the first number on the vin (from reading threads I see that is not uncommon). Thanks for the great advice Carnac!

Do you see a registration number on the truck? It will be a set of 6 letters/digits and will almost definately start with a N. If there is a 0 it is a zero not an o as in oscar. If there is a 1, it is a one not a I as in india. Biggest pet peeve and dumba@@ mistake people make in translating the numbers.

If so, get it and trott you butt over to the 2013 VIN INFO thread on this very website and that will help validate your number. (and I sit here in amazement that you hadn't done so already).

Use the cross between the dataplate and vin info to help find the vin on the frame but you must validate it by the frame. Any bone head can repaint registration number or change out a dataplate.

Any one found a number on the frame other than the ones already mentioned to the right of the steering gear assembly?

I was ready to use that number for the SF-97 until a quick search turned up another truck with the same number listed as the serial number on GL (12256104A1). My guess is that that number is a part, contract, lot, or production run number and that the data plate on the other truck on GL was unreadable so the guy working the yard used the easiest number to find on the frame. I thought if those numbers were indeed part, contract, lot, or production run numbers that similar numbers should be stamped on the passenger’s side frame rail, and sure enough I found them under the booster shield.
