M1009 Rear End Question(s)

A little while back i broke some spider gears in my rear end and have been without my beloved for a couple of months not. Being on a low budget I haven't been able to fix it yet. About a week ago a frined of mine gave me a locker (Not sure what kind) for free! I was so exited and started working right away, pulling the gov lock out, cleaning out all the extra shards of metal, etc. Well when I went to slide the locker in I noticed that the bearings were not the right size :(

So now I'm back to square one, a 86 m1009 with a thrashed rear end. I was wondering what the cheapest thing for me to do to get it fixed would be. A friend suggested repairing the broken one but I'm not sure if that's what I want to do. If its cheaper that's great but how reliable will it be? What are some good replacement rear ends that wont require me to replace the gear ratio or anything that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg (at least for now).

Any and all help is much appreciated, thank you in advance :)

Been waiting to see somebody get into this project Dingoman!

I have worked on Diffs before but not this one. My suggestion is to go through TM's with fine tooth comb. Will probably show step by step overhaul procedure?

Proceed with caution! If tolerances are not setup properly you will back in Heartbeat!

there are tons of 8.5 10 bolts in yards,70-75 novas,70-81 camaro/firebird,70-76 full size chevys, find one with 2:73 gears and up so carrier same,in late 80s trucks beefed up to 30 spline, but all others were 28 spline axles like ours, lots of posis out there as well...

There are blazers in the junkyards with the same 308 gears as the 1009s most are from the mid eightys I have come across several in the last week or two usually the build sheet is still in the glove box stating what the rear axle ratio is.

So coming straight from the factory what is the gear ratio these trucks have? 308 sounds familiar but rsh is saying 2:73 and up. I use it for 4x4 all the time so i want to be sure that both the front and rear axle have the same ratio.

there are two types of carriers for the 8.5,one accepts 2:56 and lower numbered gears, and the other uses 2:73 and higher numbered gears, our 1009s have 3:08 gears, so we use the 2:73 and up carrier.sorry didnt mean to complicate things, just thought if you were parts swapping you should be aware, your best bet is to get the whole rear from another blazer as stated above.

Its all good RSH, and yea i think thats the plan now. Going to be making some phone calls tomorrow to see if any of the yards out here have 'em.
