Road Speed 900 Series Truck?

Wow, 65 in a A3, must be turned up. I drove my 931a2 home over 300 miles yesterday pulling a little trailer and had a hard time keeping it a 55 to 58. The peddle past 45 was hard, very stiff. I have to check it today and see what was holding it back.
Yep its an oddball, my other trucks lug along at 53 all day happily.

After putting a couple of thousand miles on my truck, feeling
it out, getting to know it, looking things over and feeling comfortable
w/ my tires, drivetrain et al, alone, I decided to see what it would
do on flat ground pedal to the metal, no headwind, w/ rear canvas.
I was probably running 1TON over dry weight . Air was COLD.
No other souls around, middle of nowhere, straight flat road.

The GPS said consistently I was traveling at 68.2MPH,
indicated was about 58/59 MPH. 23XX RPM

It runs incredibly smooth. I noticed driveshaft balancing
weights the other day crawling around under there looking
for the sorce of minor leak or two and looking for issues
general in nature.

I got lucky. I would jump in this truck
and hit it to Alaska (if someone gave me a gas card! )

Well just got this new baby, have to put 120 miles north between her and Warner Robins. If I take the Hwy what road speed can a 5 ton Handle on super singles? Its my first recovery for a 5 ton 900. I can also go a two lane all the way back.
I just drove mine 300 miles. At 2000 rpms I was going 63. At 2300 I was going 67. Drove it comfortably at 2000 rpms all the way home. The power steering is awesome, like a car.

Thanks for all your input, when I did my last recovery(224 miles) in a M35a3 in November it kept wanting to run 63-65(GPS) and pulled like a champ up hill. Thats a bit over what I like to run them but this truck must have been turned up and got great mileage. You have all convinced me to take the back two lanes and keep the speed down. I think the rear tire is just underinfalted from sitting but if it looks squirrel y I am bringing a spare off a buddys truck thats newer.:driver:
How is that possible? They're all geared the same.

With my nhc250 M923 at 2100 rpm, I get 58-60 mph on the interstate running g177 11r20's. 61 on the downslope of a interstate bridge is the fastest she ran with a tailwind.....

Sometimes the tire looks fine - and might well have been at the speed it was rated for. It was on the front driver side - for a while. Now, It's 55 or less for me.20121009_150403_001.jpg

Well the winch truck is sold and I brought home a 923A2, ran great all the tires are 2010 or later and nice, truck liked 58mph on the highway, came back about 35 miles an hour on backroads and never seemed squirrely. Checked the tires twice on the trip and did a full air brake test before rolling off the site. Love the 923/5s.

Don't speed, its just not as cool as some guys think, in fact it is bad for the whole hobby... If you are, and sometimes it sure is hard not to, Hit the brakes hard at a decent clip in a big parking lot, and see what it feels like, So you don;t join the few hundred soldiers that bounced off the road, ABS is supposed to make it more safe, But the Military as a whole feels these trucks are safe at 45 ! Just remember if you or anyone wrecks one over speeding it is 100% driver error period. And foolish. Good luck, awesome truck, i feel bad I got beat to whats a 900 series truck :( All the best with her !!:)

Like said about the tires. You just do not know if any tires were low or empty for a few days, weeks , months damaging a side wall and BANG! :) 45 seems a small price to pay for safety, and they look and feel much cooler not speeding by, Most understand how foolish it is...

The military feels they are save at 45 with the run of the mill driver who is unfamiliar with air brakes and trucks in general. With a driver who is familiar with driving a truck it's not really any different then any similar truck, assuming good repair.

Agreed, they can't assume everyone has common sense so they base everything off the lowest common denominator. It the only way to do it with that many people.

I though the military actually trained and licensed a driver, before they could drive a truck.

So do a lot of big trucking companies, but that doesn't necessarily mean it takes.
