6.2 is it worth it?

I recently found a 6.2 for sale, its one of those hmmv take out motors, the guy has had the heads and lower end inspected, reworked the heads, he has a 12v and 24v IP. He has paper work for all the work done. My question is what kind of value is there here? IPs are untested, is getting the timing right on IP beyond a newb to major engine work, the top end of the engine is also currently divorced from the lower end. I'm wanting some opinions on this as a cheap option for a good motor. He also has the adapters for a 700r transmission, hes asking $550.

The IP is easier to install than a distributor from scratch on a v8 gasoline engine. The gear it bolts to is in the timing cover. There are 3 bolts and a locating pin. Basically, it can't be put on wrong as long as the gear hasn't been removed with the pump out. The rest of the install is just screwing things together. Now, those 3 bolts can only be accessed one at a time through a small hole and the engine has to be turned to get to each one. If you drop one, the front cover will have to be removed to get it out. I have done 5 or 6 IP swaps now and find the hardest part is getting comfortable while doing the work. One arm push ups while turning a wrench with the other arm get tiring. Pull the hood if you have a helper and it is much, much easier.

Do the engines have any brackets and pulleys? Those things are getting harder to find than the engines these days.

Actually, there's no need to swap the pump to convert a 24v to 12v. Just swap the solenoid/top cover.

As to the OP's question. If it's a documented known good engine that's complete. $550 is a good piece of mind IMO.

FWIW, I bought an entire 6.2 running engine with a 6.5 turbo setup for $500 once. But that was just a sweet sweet deal I lucked up on.

Very sweet deal, so sweet it makes my teeth hurt. haha
