Deuce battery question

Words of caution. Always were PPE around batteries. Always connect 12 volt charger to one battery plus+ to plus+ and negative- to negative- be sure to find the + - on each battery before connecting. Keep charger off/unplugged from house electric during connection and disconnection to battery terminals. Be prepared for an explosion with 2 person to call 911 and water to wash acid from your body. Battery is nothing to mess with. Many have exploded. The never dead ones are the worst since they put out so much hydrogen gas when discharging and charging so no sparks. Also. Rarely but has happened. Death from electrocution.
Yep - that's why I am asking so many questions. I saw one blow up on a friend years ago in Auto Mechanics at school - been weary about working on them ever since!

I am thinking about doing the 2 battery minders also. I did see some 24v Solargizers on ePay yesterday for $45 too though - that might be the other option.

When I bought my truck I had two batteries in it but they wont even crank over 6 times in this cold weather. I need to purchase new ones. The batteries are junk. I thinking two batteries with about 1000 CCA should be enough to get the truck turn over.

Do you have a charger with a desulphater capability? Have you tested the specific gravity of each cell?

Ok. That sounds better. I do believe bat minder says charge completely. Let set. Do voltage test and do hydrometer test. Before hooking the bat minder up.
If you get bats go deep cycle marine type group 31. Long lasting. Tons of power. Fit in the bat box. Should get for $80 to $120 each. I have a solargizer on mine. Solar panel keeps bats up and I have 24v and 12 volt cb taps for accessories. Then I have 28 vdc generator I can top the bats off with. If they just need to be warmed up I use a 12 charger for 20 mins each. I am usually the one who leaves somthing on or we are starting many times for some reason. I only have 60 amp generator on him so takes couple of hours running to top off. If bats are 1000 amps each that's 2000 amps so stone dead it would take 34 hours running with no lights on to charge bats.
only use distilled water to top off fluid level in battery.

Nothing wrong with the normal 6TL batteries if you take care of them and have a properly functioning charging system. I keep my batteries full and put them on a desulfating charger every couple months. I've even brought batteries back from the grave with a good desulfating cycle.

I have had excellent luck with 6TL batteries. Both of my deuces came with 6TLs installed and one is still running with the original 6TLs. With my M35A2, I replaced the original 6TLs this year with new Interstate 6TLs. Based on the date codes on the original 6TLs, I have gotten excellent service from them. If you search around you can buy new 6TLs for a reasonable price. I keep 24 volt trickle chargers on continuously. I always lkeep the batteries topped off with deionized water. Always double-check to make sure you haven't left anything turned on, such as the heater fan, as deep-cycling the batteries will definitely shorten the life expectancy.

Ohm's Law indicates if you have (2) 1000 CCA 12 Volt batteries in series to produce 24 Volts, you are only going to receive 1000 CCA. If you had both of them in parallel producing 12 Volts, then you would double the CCA's. You are correct to only use distilled water to top off a battery, and when using the BatteryMinder for maintenance, batteries must be at or very close to a full charge. I keep the BatteryMinder on my Deuce batteries all the time, it certainly won't hurt them.

Definitely need to take PPE serious, but after all these years working on trucks for a living, never saw or heard of anyone being electrocuted. If there was much danger of that, the Company I work for would make us wear low voltage gloves for sure!

A 12 volt car battery not maybe. We run 24 volts to 28 volts. It only takes 14 to 18 volts and 1 am to stop a heart through the skin. How many amps do two 6tl have. Now it has happened and will happen again. Now big companies look at the risk which with a 12 volt car battery is low but PPE for any battery work includes goggles and faceshed and hard hat and apron and gloves and shower and eyewash and a second person stand by. If you have this on no shock.

All your PPE except the gloves, is protection against acid injury not electrocution. Anything in life is possible, but in this case I believe very unlikely. Again ive felt tingles when sweaty many times, especially like on a forearm, but that's about it. Never the less, good to encourage working safe.

Voltage (volts) does not kill. Current (amps) kills. If you can get enough current (milliamps, or amps) flowing through the heart (like possibly flowing from the one arm to the other), you can seriously interrupt, or even stop, the beating of the human heart... which can be considered electrocution.

I had 500,000 volts ran through my body when I was 16 years old. This was from a Tesla Coil and therefore was at EXTREMELY low current (perhaps pico-amps). I could feel the warmth moving up my arm as I held the pliers on the Tesla Coil.

The only adverse effect was that it FRIED MY BRAIN!:naner:

That's my story & I'm sticking to it!

I can only passon the little bit that has been shared with me. Unfortunately not a single electrocuted person has been able to share their experience with us today. Those that care not to use their PPE, please add me to their will.

And not a single person can point out another person who has been killed by electrocution by truck batteries[thumbzup].. wisdom passed on by others is very valuable, and we all have lots to learn in life. BUT...not everything everyone tells you is fact. Never the less, really glad you wear all that PPE. Can be no harm in it for sure.

Your right amps [current flow] kills, not voltage.

ps: stop touching that tesla coil, cant be good for you...LOL

So we can do some experiments to put this to rest or use common sence to promote a safe and wonderful hobbie for all. I have seen several major incidents in my years and everyone could have been prevented with a little forethought and following the guidelines prepared due to some incident happening. Yes somthing has to happen before someone puts a plan together to help prevent it.

My body has a resistance of ~8MΩ (left hand to right hand; across the chest). You would need a resistance of 14kΩ to get 1mA at 14V. Unless you impale yourself on your battery, I just don't see it happening.
