FMTV legality issue?

Hey guys,have question to put out there. Not trying to start anything, just curious cause I know several of you have FMTV's. I was on another forum where a gentleman is building a 2012 BAE 6x6 into a expedition rig. When asked why not buy a FMTV from GL and he was told per BAE that by federal law it was illegal to own and operate one in civilian use in N america. No other info besides what was said. Soo not sure of BAE just wanted to make sure they sell their 122k rig or? Like I said not trying to start anything, just want to cover my myself before I pick one up.

I would guess that as long as GL is issuing SF97s for them you're fine. Enough have come out with members here having them that I would think that issue would have come up if GL wasn't sending SF97s. Still, I'll wait to here from folks that already have one.

Have to go down next week to register a couple of M116's was going to ask a supervisor about any issue's, But than again being the DMV......

Legality is simple. GL sells it and issues a SF97, it's legal. It's just a matter of how you register it.

If BAE sell a civi version of the same truck of course they are going to tell you that you can't own the military version, they want you to buy the leather upgrade.

Legality is simple. GL sells it and issues a SF97, it's legal. It's just a matter of how you register it.

Just because they sell it and issue a SF-97 doesn't mean every state will title and register it . It is a state by state issue , just look at what has happened in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Georgia . They refused to register MV's at all in some instances and has taken a great deal of work to change laws to allow them to be registered , the SF-97 didn't mean squat to them.

I know you were responding to another member but my statement in regards to the SF-97 pertained to BAE. BAE has no control over whether a state issues a title for a vehicle. If your state normally processes SF97s for military vehicles then it shouldn't matter if it's a M923 or a FMTV. BAE has no say.

If you walk into the DMV in geogia today they will refuse to register it period it was built after 1985. Since the hard work of Swiss ,Zout and many others get the law changed after july1st they will be able to register them . Having a SF-97 does not guarantee it will be registered , it just provides proof it was legally bought from the U.S. Government.

That was what I was saying, legal to own, how to register is an another ball game. Plus, depending on the purpose you might not have to register it at all.

Take it to the East Sahara DMV office for your VIN inspection when you register it...the head VIN inspector is MV-friendly and you shouldn't have any problems. If so, PM me. As long as the VIN matches from the dataplate to the frame, and to the SF-97, Nevada DMV doesn't care about anything else as long as you have the Benjamins to pay for registration (and insurance). I suspect your biggest hurdle for NV will be insurance, as most insurance agents have no idea what to do with former military vehicles. If the truck was built before 1989, you can register it as a Classic Vehicle (cheaper) but can only drive it 5K miles per year or less.

No problems here in NC. Be sure to take all of your paperwork to the DMV: SF97, Bill of Sale, Insurance Binder (specific form that serves as proof of insurance until you get the insurance card in the mail), your Driver's License. Double check to see if your state requires any other paperwork.

Fees are based on weight. When I first registered my 1975 Deuce at 14,001-lbs (smog check cutoff was 14K-lbs), the cost was $400/year. I switched it to Classic Vehicle the next year, it was $69.

If it's for personal use, have the weight dropped to 6,001-lbs...the only problem is at that weight, you'll be required to get a smog check. If you don't want to get a smog check (only required in Las Vegas Valley....Moapa, Glendale, Logandale, Mesquite, and other remote locations are NOT required to get smog check in Clark County; only other county in Nevada that requires smog check is Washoe), and can't register the truck as Classic due to it being less than 25 years old, then you'll have to bump up the registered weight to 14,001-lbs and tell them you got it to preserve it & run only in parades & shows. The East Sahara DMV office is MV-friendly.

Nevada Classic Vehicle registration caveats: max 5,000 miles allowed per year, and cannot use for commercial purposes. Smog check NOT required for CV registrations. You also cannot renew CV online; you have to fill out your odometer disclosure statement and either mail it in or renew in person.

He stated he had alot of difficulty buying the truck from Global Xpedition Vehicles and then went straight to BAE. He tried asking if he could buy newer military BAE MTV with the Cummings motor and thats when the stated he would not be allowed to operate (as a civilian) it with in N america. Hence maybe the federal law thing he was talking about? Cant see how BAE would have any say whats soo ever on any Stewart and Stevenson FMTV's sold especially with the sf-97. Local DMV inspector stated there would be zero issues and has seen one FMTV come through soo far.
