Deuce and 939 series size difference

For the life of me I cannot decide on whether to buy a m35a2 or an m923a2.

For those of you that have driven both, how much bigger is the 5 ton compared to the deuce? I live and commute through densely populated areas. I know both these trucks are big and I'll need to be extra aware when driving, but is the 5 ton significantly bigger where driving it through small cities is a downright terrible idea?

Yes, a 939 series truck is much bigger than a deuce. If you haven't driven big trucks, I'd start with a deuce. I can't say a 939 series would be a bad idea, as it has power steering and air brakes, but I don't think its a great first truck.

If you ever see both side by side (I'm sure there is a pic around here somewhere) the size difference is very noticeable. Comparing a deuce to a 5-ton is like comparing a Chevy s-10 to a Chevy K-30 dually. If it would physically fit you could put a loaded deuce in the bed of a m939 truck and it still wouldn't be loaded. Just about all the components are twice as big.


With that being said, a M931 tractor is going to be close to as maneuverable as a deuce cargo. You'll also have power steering on the M939 truck which will help in tight spots.

Before you buy a 923, try one out. It has a terrible turning radius. I won the bid on mine site-unseen. When I picked it up, I was flabbergasted at how big it is.

I own a M923A2. My first big truck. Every now and then I have turning issues: too sharp, farking Prius in the way, etc., but otherwise it's not that hard to drive. The biggest difference between the deuce and the M939 series is the height. You're sitting 6 feet up in the M939 with 1400R20 tires. Truckers look up at you. Driving the deuce is more like a lifted pickup in terms of height. Big perspective change.

I have both, and I drive both quite regularly. They are completely different animals with completely different pluses and minuses. The ONLY way you can make informed decision is to review and DRIVE both. All of the opinions here are just that, opinions. And they are not your opinions of what you want and like.

I can not comment as to the difference, but the 923A2 has not been hard to learn or drive. It is a large beast of a truck though. This is my first MV truck and other than turning and parking I have had much pleasure driving it. Just give your self lots of room and plan for the idiots on the road. It does have lots of blind spots so look 3 times then look again.

I've had four deuces and three five tons. I now have one deuce and still have all three five tons. I think the 900 series five tons are easier to drive. Power steering and an auto transmission help. In terms of width and wheelbase, there is not much difference. Just my opinion.

Funny thing is I cannot drive a manual. That being said, my roommate does and I'm usually a quick learner so I'm not worried. That's why the 900 series interested me so much.

But the size difference does seem to be significant. And although you look like more of a badass in the 900 series, I am leaning towards a deuce.

Everyone should know how to drive a manual transmission, it just might save your life one day. As for bad; a deuce is still the badest vehicle at any intersection. 5 tons are just a littler bit mo' bad. Start with a M35 and learn all there is about big trucks and a 5 ton will be the next truck in the collection.

I think the Deuce is more fun to drive, mainly because of the manual transmission. If you are tall (I'm 6'3"), the deuce is a little short. I have to bend down a bit to see under the windshield wipers if I want to look down the road. My legs are usually up against the door because there isn't enough room below the very large steering wheel when I have to push in the clutch and let it out, etc. And if you are a big guy (big gut), then the steering wheel will be a little tight. The deuce was made for a fairly small guy to drive.

The manual steering isn't bad as long as the truck is moving when you turn, which is a good idea with any truck with big tires.

When I bought the deuce and started working on it, my pickup truck look like it was made of sheet metal. When I bought my M931A2, it made the parts on the deuce look amusingly small. The 5 tons are just solid steel everything, it is insanely big and heavy.

Driving the M931A2, the cab is plenty tall for me, no bending down to see out the front windshield. Lots of room in all directions, power steering, air brakes, automatic. A very easy truck to drive. You will notice the height when you are driving the M939 series truck, you are very high up and the truck feels much bigger (probably because it is.) You will also draw more attention from city code inspectors and busy bodies in the M939 trucks, but the deuce isn't going to sneak by them either.
