No it's not, people do it all the time!
And in spite of facts. As John said, I don't want one. One of our local club members has one, and it stays broken about 20-35 percent of the time for one reason or the other. If the demill code changes, wait about four years to make a purchase, prices will have dropped through the floor. In the meantime buy up all the parts you can, there could be a boom time market for them!

My M998 runs great.. Just like anything else mechanical, the amount of downtime is directly related to the amount of PM the operator does.

Or the amount of abuse operator gives it.
I hope they start selling them.
We need to save as many as we can.
I would buy one if I could afford it even it had to be a trailer queen.
It's not like I don't have a truck to pull it with.
I don't see any difference between them and track armor
Track armor don't go anywhere you can't afford to move them so they are they are yard art work.
At least you could afford to transport these to events

Ditto
90% every truck through my shop that comes in with something wrong that could have been prevented via PMCS.
99% of owners, are just operators....I could tell you storys that would boggle the mind.
I have owned MUTTS' MB/GPW, deuces etc....they all issues...even more when they are not taken care of.
i don't see the HMMWV as any different...

If we're given up an update, I'll reopen the thread. But it seems that we've gone from the topic, to tiling/registration, to maintenance, to use.

Three threads started tonight alone.

Folks, the NSN is still listed as "Do not sell" even though the demil is code Q. Until this changes from the DLA, we're at a stand still and just listening to the words of a salesman.

One thing to note is something they have on every single listing above the demil section...

Information contained in the Manifest is third-party information deemed reliable but is not guaranteed by ********
So even they have a disclaimer that the listing is not guaranteed about the demil status.

Update:
I was given word that a USF&PO CWO4 has stated that they will be sold. I'm awaiting more details.

Reopening thread, please keep on topic of only discussing the possible sell of these. This is not a topic about insurance, titles, registration, exc. It will however be closed if someone violates the auction detail rules, divulges into argument/flaming/exc.

It was posted in an article online that dla and govplanet sat down and came to an agreement to allow the off road use only sales of the soft side non armored variants.

“We will be offering military Humvees of various model years and configurations all backed by the industry’s only guaranteed inspection reports,” said Randy Berry, senior vice president, operations and services for parent company IronPlanet. “Our GovPlanet.com marketplace combined withIronPlanet’s IronClad Assurance buyer protection is making it easier than ever for people to buy used government assets online confidently and conveniently.”

The Humvees featured on*GovPlanet.com*only include cargo and troop carriers with model numbers M998, M998A1, M1038 and M1038A1. All are “soft sided,” or unarmored, vehicles for off-road use only.

Every item on GovPlanet includes an inspection report with a thorough description of the equipment’s condition and features and photos. These reports are backed by IronPlanet’s exclusive IronClad Assurance buyer protection program, which guarantees the report is an accurate description of the item’s condition. Buyers can preview rolling stock surplus assets of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) two weeks before each auction.

Great News! I think any way to get these vehicles in the hands of the public and returning value to the taxpayers above scrap prices is a good thing. I hated seeing complete running HMMWVs driven onto flatbeds headed to the scrapyards. Prices should come down as more are sold, even with the offroad restrictions.

Yes, I posted the rumors out of a very large Air Force installation about 18 months ago or so. The coding had not been changed at the time by the Equipment Specialist to offer to the public. I recall taking some unwarranted and even hostile criticism and just asked the thread be closed to avoid any further conflict.
Meanwhile, I'm writing the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Logistics at Battle Creek for allowing the sale for "offroad use only", as a cost saving measure, where my estimates were a $100m savings to the government if they sould sell. I supported that with real numbers, but with them cutting back on the types, that may not be fully realized. Parts pricing, which was super cheap, and almost giveaway, will also rise dramatically, as prices for HMMWVs fall over the next year.
Still, we will only believe it when we see it. Its a long row to hoe. Non-believers have their day but doers win the battles in the long run.
Lets hope it goes through, for the sake of the Defense budget and return to normalcy in recycling used MVs for the benefit of the Government and the budget. Every lil bit helps.

The reason the threads were closed were because they always crater into one big BS and crap fest. (Not You Dell.)

Until we have people taking possession of them it still hasn't happened yet (I'm hoping it does) and even Drew's post is just hearsay second hand. THAT is the reason for keeping the threads closed.

Now, if everyone keeps the crap to a minimum we will have a great week next week (for those with deep enough pockets).

Should bring some more people into the hobby which has to be good. The lack of vehicles smaller than 2 1/2 and 5 tons is an obstacle to many of us due to local restrictions, etc. Will be fun to stand back and watch the prices. Overall, great news! Bob

Well, this is exciting for me, but I need to know two important things still:

What will the demil code be, and will they have a title?
