The mk48 is back together and running,I only took it about a half a mile up the road.It was a long day.My mechanic said dont ever call him to replace the transfer case again.It was a job.Now I get to drive it and learn her secrets.Be fore I go anywere with it I am going to go completely over it good.

Congratulations! That looked like a huge job. I'm curious what you will find if/when you look into what failed on the transfer case.

It got hot at some point,the paint was blistered above the input shaft.I think the lube pump went bad,and the input shaft went out or snapped.That big transfer case only has about 6'' of oil capacity.

Think I'll stick to CUCV's after seeing this post, I think I would just sit in the cab and drink if it broke down.

I just went through the same thing. The suction hose on the T-case oil pump was kinked.

Has anyone found the Lubrication Order for the MK48? I've looked some without success. There was a thread earlier this year

From Olive Drab site - "The lubrication order is Marine Corps Lubrication Instruction LI 2320-12/9B or Army Lubrication Order LO 9-2320-297-12. It consists of 25 cards."

Here is the information from LO-9-2320-279-12 for the M977. It calls for OE/HDO MIL-L-2104. The MIL-L-2104 specifications read: " Description: A lubricating oil for an internal combustion engine, combat/tactical service, low volatility. Synthetic oil with additives for anti-oxidation and corrosion protection. Designed for use in all combat and tactical, diesel and gasoline-powered ground vehicles and equipment, and include performance requirements for power shift transmissions. This oil is also used in many hydraulic, power steering, power transmission, and gear box applications, as specified by the lube orders."

It goes against my grain to put engine oil in a gearbox, but unless there is solid information to the contrary, that is what I'd run. The synthetic may do a better job for a gearbox than a straight petroleum based motor oil.

I just remembered that as far as I know, no one on SS has been able to come up with the TM for the MK18A1 rear unit, maybe the guy you talked to has access to that too.

I can't even imagine wading into all those hoses and wires, let alone moving parts that size! Good on you and your mechanic, awesome job!
