New M1009 from Southern Germany

Hey everyone!

I bought a M1009 last Year, due to Technical Manuals etc. I got told to browse Steelsoldiers, so I thought it wont be a bad thing to register here

There not much to say about me, I´m a young earthmoving equipment Operator (dont know if this is the correct Term to describe it) ... so I am used to drive big american engines the whole day (Excavator up to ~100Tons, Wheel and Crawler Loaders, Dumpers etc.)
I work in a "big" quarry here in southern Germany..well americans would consider it to be a tiny "Sandbox" :wink:

I had some vehicles over the years, but I always searched for something...more special than the usual fancy, metallic, lowered Cars the ones in my Age drive...
Soon it was clear: it must be an american V8 ! ...well at first i had my eyes on a nice 67 Chevrolet Nova with a Stroked 350cui V8, but i was too slow to catch it :lol:

So the search went on and more accidently I saw that Camo painted Blazer ...then ..well you know... :D So i kept searching for CUCV´s here in Germany ..but there was only Crap for huge prices...so it took some time , but then i found one that had a good price, Dutch title and German "Tüv"

I gave myself some crash instructions from the web and then went to check it out (drove about 400km one way) ... the people were nice and we did a long test drive

I absolutely felt in love with that little Cutvee hehe .... i wasnt scared bout some Dex Oil she lost ...and so i bought her! Well shes not got the original Paintjob..but i think she looks great anyway :D

Due to lower German Taxes its now a Single Cab (loosing the Backseats reduces the Taxes about 2000 % huehuehue) ..

well never had any Problems, just refreshed every Fluid, got new filters and a Transmission Oilpan with a drain screw, and some new Sealings ...now i am working on restoring the complete Brake System ..some dutch mechanics filled it up with Dot4 ...well i better throw out everything and replace it with Professional Grade :D got her in wintersleep now, **** salted roads here^^

Shes got some 33x12.5 Tires on, the "original" are a bit small i think ^^ and well, here are some Pics , enough talked

Originaly these had silicone brake fluid, so you need to look into wheather you need to flush the system and put silicone back in or find out what needs to be done to replace with DOT 3.
I don't have all the answers but guys on here will point you in the right direction.

Im gonna throw out the complete Braking System...only the metal lines will remain... and im gonna change it to DOT 3 , because the original DOT5 Silicone Brake Fluid is not really legal here...if something happens (like a simple Car-Accident) my Insurance could refuse to pay anything , because i had "bad" brakefluid...so im gonna step on the safe side ^^

And I became infected with the disease when i saw my first CUCV..but didnt buy that one...had many Rust Holes, some windows and a seat were missing, Under the hood there was a pigeon nest in the Aircleaner ...and so on :D ..that one was totally wrecked .. so I took my time to get a cheaper one in an atleast "driveable" shape... but i think for what you can get over here, I did a good shot :D

Haha - Boss says : I want a machine you can work with, not an oversized rice-cooker that needs to be repaired 24/7 ! ..German Machines we use are some small wheel loaders (but the most are CAT) and Wheeled Excavators... Rest is completely Caterpillar...

Welcome from Sunny Florida! :) I had no idea that DOT5 was illegal in Germany. Are you planning on replacing the brake calipers and rear wheel cylinders?

Hey ODFever, im looking forward to replace everything except the metal lines...have everything here, new Master Cylinder, Hoses, etc etc. I even got some new Brake Discs (not from US , some guy in germany had them in the basement for 5yrs , then he sold his K5 and forgot them :D ) .. but I never had any problems with my brake system, except for a stuck parking brake... lots of WD40 and now its working fine :D

but i replace it to stay on the safe side..if I do the Discs aswell im planning on replacing the front wheel bearings.. .. hopefully i bought the right ones ..package took 3 weeks to get here :D

and im a bit confused about my tow pintle, some say dont ever tow more than 500kg on a m1009 , others say: pff I tow 5 tons over non paved roads and nothing happend! my papers say im allowed to tow almost 1700kg, if that was doable I´d really appreciate it... my dads Caravan just weights 1600 :D

You should do a Doghead mod on the starter relay if it has not already been done. Look in the forum dealing with M1009 on this site for instructions on how to do it.

basically this "doghead" is just stronger HD relay ? .. will do that soon .. im scared of a "stuck" starter since I heard of it ... another m1009 from germany just startet to burn because of this... luckily the owner had a fire extinguisher by hand... I bought one the same day I heard that story :D

Thanks, but for now everythings fine, starts, runs , idles, shifts, stands and brakes fine :D even with the wrong DOT4 fluid...no problems, but it may kill any rubber components in the brake system...does the brake proportioning valve have any rubber components? because that was the only thing I wasnt able to get ...over here they are like weighted up in massive gold :D ..and then not new, just used ones...

I buy from truck parts trading in holland. Everything in Europe is going to cost you more but they have it in stock and in most cases 24 hours to your door. If you have any nice military collectors rally there keep me in mind. I like to attend rally's all over Europe if I can.

yeah the 24hrs issue was the point when I bought a new thermostat housing seal...needed it quick because we went on a 500km holiday trip with the CUCV ...for that price I could´ve buyed up to 10 etc... incl. shipping to germany... but im no friend of RTV sealant & such stuff...

so mostly I order my parts in greater packages directly from the U.S. ... if you know what your going to need, this is the cheapest way

And that's the right enough term for us all to understand you (believe me, your English is going to be a whole lot better than the German of most of us). In fact, I was in the U.S. Navy a long time ago, and that's exactly what they called those who operated the big equipment, and I suppose that they still do: E.O.'s (Equipment Operators).

And quarries come in all sizes here in the States; unless you're from Texas. "Everythings bigger in Texas" they'll tell you.

But let's not get any Texans started here. It's hard to stop them once they wind up....

Thanks :D in germany there are small vehicles common...even my M1009 is called "a monster truck" by passengers when I park somewhere.... :D guess engine & drivetrain weight as much as some of those moving shoeboxes do...
