AM General Engine Questions...

Did the M939 series AM General 5-ton trucks, specifically the M934, all come with the same engine? I've heard that they were either the HC 250(?) or a Cummins '8.2 liter'. Anybody have the definitive answer?

Your asking about the A2 versions having a smaller turbo Diesel engine? Yes the trucks had a non turbo larger engine originally. . They were fitted with a smaller turbo cummins, and CTIS. Both engines are solid in my opinion.

The A2 series are the only ones to come with the 6CTA8.3 turbocharged engine. The "A0" and A1 both have the NHC-250. The A2 series are also the only ones with CTIS. TM9-2320-272-10 page 53

Where does this mystical "A0" come from? I've been around these trucks along time and I can't find any record of it except a few times here. Is there some addendum to the TM's we need to get? Didn't see it in the TM but I'll go back and review.

People do that so you know they mean the first series, not just forgetting to mention the series. It isn't official but I get it.

Notice the quotes? The unofficial designation here on this site to the first series.

A2 were Cummins 8.3L (not 8.2L). 6CTA8.3 is the proper engine designation, as stated above, which is a turbocharged engine. All previous generations were Cummins NHC 250 which is a 14L engine and non-turbocharged. Difference in fuel economy is approx. 10mpg vs 4mpg respectfully, so the A2 typically sell for more coin plus they have CTIS. You really gotta love the idle sound of the Cummins 855 (14L) to have it, because you will pay for it in fuel usage. The low end torque is off the charts though I think for this engine. The 8.3L doesn't make any power until the turbo wakes up and calls for more fuel. Both engines are fairly reliable as stated and parts are easily had in the civilian market.

I hear people saying 4mpg for the NHC-250, but I get better than 8 with mine, I clocked 8.5 including some mountain grades.
