006.jpg007.jpg008.jpg009.jpgI was at a scrap yard and saw this Detroit diesel engine and Allison transmission. I could put it in my M1009 :) Just asking? I was asked to buy it and turned it down. I have no idea what it is and what it would be worth. Any ideas?

From army-guide.com

The XTG411-4, -4B and -5 transmission models were developed by Allison Transmission and derived from the transverse engine-mounted XTG411-2A crossdrive transmission. The XTG411-2A development began in the 1960s and it was in production for the US Army M109 series Self-Propelled Howitzer, M578 Light Recovery Vehicle and the M992 Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle programmes. Requirements for higher power levels and increased mobility of similar tracked vehicles in the 1980s evolved successfully into these enhanced transmission models.

Digging around on Google:
The M107 is a long-ranged self-propelled gun manufactured in USA

The propulsion of the M107 is a General Motors 8V71T diesel V8 with 345 at 2 300 rpm, coupled to an Allison XTG-411-2A automatic transmission with 4 forward gears and 2 reverse gears, producing a top speed of 56 km/h. The fuel capacity is 1 100 liters, allowing for a 720 km range.

My buddy just got a m110a2 howitzer, it has a Detroit diesel. Not sure which one. It's been sitting for ten years, but he got it to run. Still need the fuel system cleaned up. I know how you all love pics so here you go.

Nice.

I think if I ever got a self-propelled howitzer, I'd basically have to quit both gun and vehicle hobby collecting. Where do you go from there?

So to put in bluntly I should just let it go to the scrap. It has only the value of what it weighs. I did see that part of the demill process was to bust things on the engine valve covers and rocker assemblies on the engine. I will just let it be scrap.

Aircraft carriers! Think about how much fun that would be with a busybody HOA!

"Mr. Tex, the HOA rule are very clear. Your vehicle must fit into your garage."

I can't believe that the transmission/gear box assembly hasn't been snapped up by someone yet...these don't seem to come around very often.

Anyone give Wehring a heads-up on this yet?

Well, I would probably go to divorce court.
The Mrs. is a very patient lady. M1008 and M101A3 trailer, no problem.
A deuce? Maybe, if it runs and drives. An SP gun, well, even she might
throw in the towel.
Good luck on the new toy, I'm just jealous

At this point scrap prices are down so it is not worth that much to the scrap man. If somebody wants this thing they need to pull the trigger now. Send me a PM real soon.

Sad that they let the valve covers get smashed up like that. No telling what all is inside that engine now. But detroits are common at least. The value is actually in that gearbox.
