HMMWV on Grease

Has anyone here run their HMMWV on used vegetable oil AKA "Grease"?
What are the pros and cons?
is there a better way to do it verses a bad way?

Seems like the simplest way to start is to install a separate fuel tank and make sure to filter the vegetable oil as best as possible prior to putting it in the tank.
Also, i've read something about adding some regular diesel into the mix...not sure why.
From what I've heard/read, running on vegetable oil may prolong the life of the motor and maybe even improve MPGs?

Are you going to use just veggie oil or bio diesel?
That will help...
Pure veggie oil is to thick so it must be heated to work.

My truck had a sticker on the rear saying it was run on bio diesel at some point. I was kind of curious about what that entailed.

Waste vegetable oil is referred to as WVO. Never heard of it as grease.

seems like with the kind of winters we get here(-20F), biodiesel is the only option. Probably 50/50 wih regular diesel when very cold.

Why? That is the bigger question....but I guess to each his own. I prefer to keep them correct.
maybe we need a "Hot rodding and upgrades" section as they have for the Deuce.

With ULSD now floating around 2.10-2.20 a gallon the idea of running non standard fuels and the risks associated doesn't make a lot of sense.


Now when fuel was 4.25 a gallon it was a different story, but not worth the hassle now.

By the barrel petroleum has actually dropped to below half of what it was just a few years ago.
However, the prices at the pump move a little differently...

I guess I'm just looking for another project, as if I don't have more than enough already...

A half and half mix would reduce you running costs. Most diesels will run on clean pump diesel mixed with clean vegi oil. or similar without problems.

I ran my last pick-up on Used Veggie oil. I will give you the process I went through.
First, after collecting it you have to filter it down to 5 micron. That was a messy job and cleaning the filters was not fun. (Finding a source for free WVO is getting harder as large Bio Diesel companies are buying it from the end users)
Second, it is much thicker than diesel so you have two options, cut it 75 diesel/25 WVO or install two tanks one for diesel and one for WVO. (What I did)
That requires that you start the truck on the diesel, I had a fuel line heater and a fuel filter heater. Note that before you shut off the truck you need to switch back to Diesel to clear the lines out. I also installed a high performance fuel pump and fuel injector pump.
And lastly, WVO contains a high concentration of glycerin (What they use to make soap) this can eat away at standard rubber fuel line.
IMHO I would not do it again.

I am confused, I thought it was the residual methanol in manufactured biodiesel that attacked the rubber and the glycerin acts as a lubricant in the pumps/injector system. Did you run ANY manufactured biodiesel? Did you have problems with your fuel lines? I am planning a conversion in the future.
